Obituary of RICHARD BASIL SMALL
RICHARD BASIL SMALL
May 1, 1936 – September 12, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Holy Family Home in Winnipeg at the age of 89 years.
Richard was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He spent his early years living in various towns in Canada before settling in Winnipeg, where he began a long career with Transport Canada. Richard attended Isaac Newton High School and carried throughout his life a love of music, especially singing in Ukrainian choirs.
Richard will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his children Andrew (Kerry), Nicole (Dino) and Thomas (Laura) and by his grandchildren Alyssa, Mackenna and Ericka. He leaves behind many cousins and extended family. Richard was predeceased by his beloved wife Alice; his parents Basil and Cecilia; his sister Deanna and his baby brother Raymond.
Richard enjoyed the simple joys of life—taking day trips to Gimli, getaways to the Warroad Casino in Minnesota and time spent picking morel mushrooms, Saskatoon berries and blueberries with his cousin Henry and wife Helen. His warm presence, gentle humour, and steady love for family will be cherished always.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Holy Family Home for their excellent and compassionate care of Richard over the past two years.
Funeral service will be held at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, Winnipeg, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Bohdan Lukie officiating. Richard will be resting at Holy Family Cemetery.
Cropo Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Donations in memory of Richard may be made to Holy Family Home.
