Obituary of LUELLA THIESSEN
Luella Thiessen
February 8, 1944 – December 26, 2025
Luella passed away peacefully after a short illness, on December 26th, 2025 at the age of 81.
She was predeceased by her husband Ed, and son Jeff. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Darwin (Andrea), grandchildren Hannah and Caleb, daughter-in-law Brenda, sisters Florence Neufeld (Milton), Lynn Kehler (Ed), Zoe Boucher, and by her extended family and close friends.
Born in Steinbach, Manitoba, Luella moved to Winnipeg in her early years. While working behind the counter at Bassey Drug Store she caught the eye of a handsome young mechanic, and began a lifelong love story.
Ed and Luella married in 1963, and in the next few years added Darwin and Jeff to complete their family. Luella took great pride in her role as homemaker, and supported her family in every way imaginable, from making bread and soap from scratch, to running her home daycare and cleaning services. Her genius lay in the kitchen though, and to this day the family talk about her pumpkin pie and legendary buns.
In their retirement years Ed and Luella spent a number of winters in Arizona, and formed lasting friendships with the “snowbird” group. They enjoyed many summers relaxing at St. Malo, and travelling with their trailer to take in music festivals all around Manitoba.
Luella’s greatest joy came from connections with friends and family. Even though she was not the most avid sports fan, Luella never missed the opportunity to attend a hockey, soccer, volleyball, football, or curling match to cheer on her grandchildren. Her life revolved for many years around her coffee date schedule, and in later years around every activity the Parkway had to offer, and always, the treasured Thiessen breakfasts.
Luella found comfort and fellowship in her attendance at Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, and we extend our appreciation to the Penners for their commitment to helping Luella attend these last few years.
A celebration of life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, on Tuesday, January 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.
The family extends our gratitude to Rev. John Elias for leading the service today.
