Obituary of ALFRED SKOWRON
With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Alfred Skowron, beloved husband of Grace; father and stepfather; grandfather and step-grandfather.
Alf was born in Winnipeg to his Polish parents, Jozef Skowron and Julja Szot Skowron, and was always very proud of Winnipeg and of Canada. He served as a Councillor for the City of Winnipeg from 1971 to 1989 and was originally a member of the NDP party. Alf cared deeply about his city and did a great deal of good for its people, always being actively involved in the reconstruction of Winnipeg and in planning for the city’s future. He also helped various ethnic organizations with their needs and struggles.
Alf was a devoted husband to Grace and always cared deeply about his children, often asking Grace to make sure their grandchildren were doing well. He loved family gatherings around the supper table and especially enjoyed watching their grandchildren open their presents.
Alf loved opera and concerts at the Centennial Concert Hall. Together with Grace, he attended every opera and many concerts. He especially loved it when Grace sang at home.
From his early years as a young teenager, Alf was involved with football games at Winnipeg’s old stadium, as well as hockey and concert events. He worked hard from a young age, and as a teenager, he already owned his own car. As a City Councillor, he proudly served on the Board of Directors for the Winnipeg Enterprises Corporation at the Winnipeg Arena.
Alf absolutely loved his Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He never missed a game and traveled with the team to every Grey Cup.
When Alf’s illness began, it was not yet known what type of illness it was, as it was very rare. Grace drove her husband to various specialists as needed. Stewart, Alf’s son, was also involved and helped with transportation to medical appointments.
Grace devoted her life to her beloved Alf, caring for him day and night and attending to all his needs. Finally, two years ago, some medical equipment was rented for Alf, and daily help began to arrive. Grace hoped this would bring her some relief, but it did not, and she continued to care for Alf even more physically, sacrificing her own well-being.
A special “thank you” to WRHA for the equipment and much-needed supplies, and especially to Parminder Grewal (Pam) for her devoted morning home-care visits. Thank you to our family doctor, Piotr Bialy, for his home visits and dedicated care. A very heartfelt “thank you” to our very special priest, Father Valery Bykowski, who made several pastoral visits to our home, bringing Holy Eucharist and praying with us. On several occasions, Alf received his Last Rites from Father Valery. These spiritual visits were deeply needed and greatly appreciated.
Toward the end of Alf’s life, due to Grace’s own health, Alf was moved for a very short time—first to Riverview Clinic and shortly afterward to Jocelyn House. Grace is very thankful for the care provided at both places. The doctors, nurses, and staff did an excellent job caring for Alf. Grace was there almost daily to help whenever needed. She spent many hours beside Alf’s bed, praying and singing songs to her beloved husband.
Alf was predeceased by his parents, Jozef and Julja; his stepmother, Mary; his siblings, Ted and Adele, and their spouses; and his daughter-in-law, Caroline.
