Obituary of JOHN FERREIRA
JOAO “JOHN” CAMPOS FERREIRA
It is with deep sadness that our family announces that Joao (John) Campos Ferreira passed away suddenly yet peacefully on February 5, 2026 in the comfort of his home at the age of 76 years.
John was often affectionately referred to as “Uncle John”.
John is predeceased by his father Diamantino Moura Ferreira, his mother Maria da Gloria Campos, his sister Helena and his brothers Manuel and Manuel.
John is survived by his wife Grace, children, Paul (Connie) Ferreira of St. Andrews, David (Jennifer) Ferreira of Winnipeg and Michael Ferreira of Winnipeg and grand-children Abigail, Elliot, Madelyn, Grayson and Reign.
He also leaves behind his brothers, Joaquin (Idalia) Ferreira of Crayssac, France, Luis (Fatima) Ferreira of Braganca, Portugal, Antonio (Maria de Fatima) Ferreira of Magescq, France and Vasco (Aida) Ferreira of Toronto, 15 nieces and nephews Marisol, Dave, Bruno, Sandrine, Cecilia, Julie, Steven, Kevin, Raymon, Christopher, Adriana, Nelson, Andrea, Nicholas and Brittany and many great–nieces and great-nephews.
John was born in Casa de Estrada, near Popolo, Portugal. Reminiscent of old postcards of Northern Portugal with cobble stone streets, homes with no running water or electricity and of older women in dark clothing standing in open doorways. He spent many years in a seminary growing up, as a teen he decided to leave the priesthood and complete high school in Alijo. After high school he did some post secondary education and was working with the municipal government when he met his soon to be wife Grace. During their courtship he was drafted into the Portuguese army. While enlisted he rose to the ranks of commando and performed special ops in numerous Portuguese colonies abroad. John and Grace got married while he was on leave 6 months after first meeting each other. They were reunited after he finished his tour a couple years later. John came to Canada in 1973 and soon got a job working at Co-Op Implements. John wanted better and furthered his education in the evenings at Red River College and became a Tool & Die Maker. This is where he found his calling. A fantastic machinist, he could contrive many different objects, machines and parts. He was a master of many things, always willing to lend a hand to anyone that would ask. John lived to work. John spent many years with Co-Op Implements, All-Fab and later Acme Welding. Acme provided him a safe place to ‘go and play’, he was in his element at work, his happy place. Some golf, some fish, John worked!
The family especially thanks Cancer Care Manitoba. The staff and clinicians were fantastic making John’s last few weeks very comfortable, easing the pain and giving hope.
