Obituary of JOHN RONALD SIMMONDS

John Ronald Simmonds

April 6, 1940 - March 12, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Simmonds at the age of 85 years.

Left to mourn and cherish his loving memory is wife, Angela, Son Gary (Jennifer Slater) and his children Sabrina, Steven and Sarah Slater, Son Ron (Carmen) and his child Cole. He also leaves behind his sister Cheryl and his brother Glen.

He was predeceased by parents Cecil and Mary (nee Gross) Simmonds and brother Paul.

John was someone who loved science and technology. After graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, he completed his first year of engineering at the University of Manitoba, following this he moved to Toronto. In Toronto he completed his Electronic Technician’s course at the Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University). Upon completion he moved to Montreal where he had a job with Northern Electric before accepting a job at CBC in Ottawa. Eventually he moved back and established himself at CBC in Winnipeg.

Back in Winnipeg he started taking dance lessons, which not only helped him improve his dancing abilities but lead him to meeting Angela. They were married on March 15, 1969 and later welcomed their two sons.

John was an inquisitive and quiet man, who listened to others intently. When someone had his attention, they would be met with smart and curious questions once they were finished telling their story or update. He wanted his children and grandchildren to succeed and took pleasure in hearing of their individual successes. It always felt as if something grand had been accomplished if his smile perked up mid-story.

John’s life wasn't easy, overcoming many different illnesses and health scares, but he wasn’t one to share his pain. Although we are saddened by his loss, we take comfort in knowing that he is at peace and resting
