EDWARD HENRY KARAN

September 22, 1930 – March 22, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Edward after a long and full life.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Beverly Pope (Mark Pope), Terry Karan, Marilyn Kess (Paul Kess); grandchildren, Crystal Greenaway (Matthew Greenaway), Tyler Kess (Michele Kess), Vanessa Kess (Robbie Kalid), Evan Pope (Bryanna Halabura), Benson Pope (Turner Leggero), and great-grandchildren Evelyn, Viola, Ethan, Brady and Isaac.  He also leaves a niece Jocelyne, nephew Greg and several 2nd cousins, extended nieces, nephews and in‑laws from his deceased wife’s family.  Edward was recently predeceased by his wife of 73 years, Nadia, his parents, his brother and sister-in-law, Borden and Millie Karan and brother Jerry Karaniewich.

Edward was born in Hamilton, Ontario and was eventually raised in the North End of Winnipeg where he had strong roots.  He worked at a bowling alley as a pin setter, before he eventually started a long storied career, first as a helper, then as a Carman with CP Rail which he spoke of often as his grandchildren will attest to.

Edward met Nadia in 1951 at Mac’s Bowling Alley.  They were married on October 18, 1952, and danced to the music of a seven piece orchestra with three saxophones.  Dancing and socializing were the theme of Edward and Nadia going out dancing three times a week.  They continued to bowl in leagues and, in particular, St. Nick’s Bowling League where they enjoyed great companionship and fun.

Edward has three children, Beverly, Terry and Marilyn.  All three kids took music lessons; the girls also took tap dancing lessons while Terry played on hockey teams.  In early years, many of day trips were taken to Grand Beach, Winnipeg Beach and Falcon Lake by packing up the car for the day and heading back to the city in the evening.  One time Dad drove through a campsite and saw all the families having dinner at their camp site and didn’t have to leave.  So, in 1969 Dad purchased a Triple E trailer so we could spend more time at the beach.   The family spent many years camping together at Falcon Lake with trips to Banff, Alberta and Niagara Falls, Ontario.  In later years cottaging at Winnipeg Beach became the getaway from the city, where all family gathered creating a lot of memories, particularly for the grandchildren.

Dad always did the renovations around the house, including building a garage and renovating two bedrooms into a kitchen / dining room.  He was very handy and was always fixing things.

To all that knew our dad (Edward, Eddie, Uncle Ed) for a long time, knew that he was all about having fun in life, dancing, singing, laughing and enjoying music.

The family would like to thank the WRHA Home Care staff for all of their care that he received over the years, particularly in the last six months.  We also thank the HSC staff for their care on his brief stay there.  We also thank Fr. Isidore Dziadyk, OSBM  and Fr. Zachary Shwaluk, OSBM for their prompt support and comfort to my father and our family.

Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Avenue.  Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main Street.
