Obituary of SONIA MARIE SZELEMEJ
Sonia Szelemej
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sonia Szelemej, after a brief battle with cancer on April 4, 2026, at the age of 61.
Sonia was born on May 6, 1964, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was an only child, deeply cherished by her parents. She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt and friend who touched the lives of many with her kind spirit and loving nature.
Sonia leaves to mourn and cherish her memory her husband, Jaroslaw; her children, Kathryn and Andrew; and many close family members and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Eva Zajac.
Sonia was deeply proud of her Ukrainian roots. She was an active member of her church and the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada. She worked for the Seven Oaks School Division which she enjoyed immensely. She was fulfilled by cooking and baking for others as well as tending to her garden while always being accompanied by music.
Sonia was a light in the lives of everyone who knew her—bubbly, warm, and endlessly kind. Her greatest joy came from caring for others, always putting their needs before her own and finding simple, beautiful ways to make people feel special. Sonia truly embodied what it meant to be selfless. She had a way of bringing comfort and happiness into even the smallest moments, usually through laughter or her love of singing. She believed in the goodness of people and gave her heart freely, offering friendship, compassion, and unwavering support to all who crossed her path.
Above all, she was the soul of her family—a deeply devoted and nurturing mother and wife, whose love knew no limits. Her love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she cherished, forever shaping who they are.
We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the staff at Victoria Hospital for their compassion and care during her final days. As well, thank you to our family and friends who have been supporting us through this heartbreaking time. A special thank you to Sonia's lifelong friend Olga Kandia who was always there to support her and our family.
A Divine Liturgy will be held on Tuesday April 14, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St., Winnipeg. Interment to follow at All Saints Cemetery.
All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend.
Pallbearers will be:

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
