I played hockey with “Billy” for about five years at C.U.A.C. Community Centre. His Dad was our general manager. Bill was a very good hockey player and a quiet friend and team mate. He was at times a little too modest. In those days, with only six teams in the NHL, it was really hard to break in. If Bill played today, I’m sure he would have been playing in the NHL - he was that good. Since I read his obituary this morning, I have been thinking about him and his family all day. I can still see the duplex they lived in on Mountain Avenue. His dad was a war amputee and worked at Eaton’s. His sister and mom always came to our games. If I may take the liberty and tell a short story. At one practice, when we were about fourteen years of age, I had forgotten a piece of my equipment at home. Mr. Bond, our manger was already out skating. When he got word that I was missing some equipment he said he would drive me home. I expected him to remove his skates first. But no, he jumped in his car with his skates still on and proceeded to drive me home. This is a man with a single arm driving with skates on. I laugh now about it, but at the time I closed my eyes and held my breath. My sincere condolences to Bill’s family. I wish now that we would have reconnected at some point. Scott Johnston
