EMIL REKRUT
January 6, 1929 – October 16, 2023
Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. Remaining to cherish Emil’s memory is his wife Janina, daughter Ala (Jonathan), son Adam (Sandra), sister Anna Wasilewski and granddaughter Emily. Emil was predeceased by his parents Wladislaw and Julia Rekrut, sister Weronika, and brother Frank.
Emil was born in Poland. In February 1940 under the Soviet occupation his family was forced from their farm to a labour camp in Siberia. In July 1941 they were released and journeyed through Uzbekistan, Iran and India before reaching a settlement for displaced Poles in Koja, Uganda in 1944. They travelled to England in 1948 and were sponsored to come to Winnipeg by extended family in Canada.
In 1950 Emil enrolled in the University of Manitoba and received his BA in History in 1955, Bachelor of Social Work in 1957 and a Master of Social Work in 1962. From 1957 to 1990 he was a social worker for the Government of Manitoba.
He was active in the Polish community for many years, and enjoyed beekeeping and gardening.
The funeral mass will be at Holy Ghost Church, 342 Pritchard Ave at 10:00 am, on October 25 with viewing and rosary to start at 9:30am.
We are especially gratefully for the compassionate care by the staff at Misericordia Place, where Emil spent his last year. Donations may be made to the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation.
