Obituary of DORIS FOSTEY
The gardens in heaven will bloom brighter with the passing of Doris Fostey on January 21, 2025, at age 101 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
However, those who knew Doris are aware of the family story that she was actually a year older – one of those details that made her a unique person who will be greatly missed.
Doris was an avid gardener. The front yard of her home on Jefferson Avenue was known for its beds of colourful tulips, lilies and petunias.
Her love of working the soil likely came from growing up on the family farm near Roblin, Man., where she and her three sisters learned their work ethic by doing all the chores.
She was predeceased by husband John, granddaughter Samantha Owen, parents Mike and Sophie Slusar (nee Midzian) and sisters Nettie Sheremeta, Olga Zarazun and Anne Styba.
Doris will be fondly remembered by her children, sons Ted Fostey (Lorie) of Calgary, Jack Fostey (Kathy) of Yorkton and daughter Judy Owen (Bruce) of Winnipeg.
Doris was proud of granddaughters Michelle and Laura Owen, whom she babysat for years and spoiled with her special chicken noodle soup.
Jack and Kathy also blessed her with granddaughters Jennifer and Wanda and grandson Ken, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Doris was a teacher in the Roblin area when she met John. Ted was born in Roblin and the three moved to Port Alberni, B.C., where John was in the lumber industry. Jack and Judy were born in B.C. and the family also lived in Sinclair Mills, Prince George and Kamloops.
It was in Kamloops where John opened his first butcher shop, following in the footsteps of his father’s shop in Vita, Man. Doris worked alongside him.
When the family moved to Winnipeg, John opened Fostey’s Fancy Sausage and was known for making outstanding garlic sausage. He passed away in 1984 after Doris cared for him following his stroke.
Caring for people was one of Doris’s well-known traits. She was always described as a kind, friendly lady who had spunk.
She was heavily involved in her church, the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral. After moving into Holy Family Home in February 2014, her room had a view of the church.
The family will never forget the compassionate care our mom received at Holy Family, especially from staff on Unit 4A. They treated her with respect and understanding when her dementia progressed. Some affectionately called her “Teacher” and “Sunshine” and staff was amazed at her love of reading.
A heartfelt thank you to her longtime companion, Emily Kosack, who deeply cared for Mom and became a member of our family.
Losing a parent is like losing a piece of your history, and the family of Doris will forever be grateful for her guidance, support and love.
It’s the family’s wish that any memorial donations be made to Holy Family Home – Festival of Lights 2024. Details can be found at www.holyfamilyhome.mb.ca
