Obituary of JEAN CIASTKO
JEAN CIASTKO
December 25, 1921 – June 19, 2013
It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear Mom and Nana. She died on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the Victoria General Hospital.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter (1992), her parents Paul and Anna Kolody and her sisters Kay, Mary, Stella, Lena, Tillie and Helen and brother John.
She is survived by her sons Jerry (Agnes) and Bob (Linda McFadyen) and grandchildren Craig (Susan) Ciastko, Shelley (Paul) Candeias, Tamatha Ciastko, Rob (Heather) Ciastko; great grand-children Amy (Trever) Sklar, Sydney and Caelin Ciastko, Katarina, Natalia and Alexia Candeias, Christopher (Lindsay) Ciastko; great-great grandchildren Connor and Dominic Sklar; sisters Rose Semkiw and Olga Iwaniuk and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mom was born and raised in Meleb, Manitoba and attended Cumming School. She married Dad in 1941 and they settled in Winnipeg to raise their family. Both Mom and Dad loved to entertain and hosted many events with friends and family that always included wonderful food and dancing.
Mom also worked outside of the home for many years. She enjoyed the many families that she worked for as a house cleaner. She also enjoyed her work at the Ogilvie Flour Mill. Mom worked very hard as a homemaker and took great pride in her home. She was a wonderful, generous and caring mother to her sons and their families. She cherished and took great pride in her grandchildren, her great- grandchildren and her great great-grandchildren.
Mom was an exceptional cook and well known for the best perogies, cabbage rolls and perishky in town. For many years the family gathered at her home for Sunday dinners. We will miss her many contributions to our family dinners, where she never arrived empty handed. She was still cooking in very large quantities for her family until the last few weeks prior to her passing.
Mom attended The Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church throughout her life. She enjoyed the many hours spent there with her church seniors club, especially making the fund raising perogies. Mom also took pride in her garden which she tended until moving to the Luther Home in 2011. She spent leisure hours there reading her paper, doing her puzzles and continued making her family’s favourite foods and treats.
We’ll miss our Mom and Nana greatly. She was our family matriarch and we all loved her. Rest in peace.
Thanks for all the years you gave us
And for the times we shared
We only hope that when you left us
You knew how much we cared
