Obituary of NELLIE SUMKA
NELLIE SUMKA (NEE ZORNIAK)
December 16, 1926 - June 24, 2013
It is with love and sadness that we announce the passing of Nellie Sumka on Monday, June 24, 2013.
Nellie was predeceased by her beloved and devoted daughter Joanne and late husband John Sumka. She was also predeceased by parents John and Irene Zorniak and siblings: Ann, John, Mary, Kay, Olga, Mike, Sophie, Pearl, Harry, Helen and Sadie. Nellie is survived by her sisters Stella and Betty and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nellie was born in Hamrlik, Manitoba on December 16, 1926 and was raised and educated near Poplarfield, Manitoba. Nellie married John Sumka on June 3, 1947 and had their daughter Joanne on February 26, 1951.
Nellie and Joanne moved to Winnipeg from the country. Nellie came with meagre belongings so despite the barriers involved with such a move, had to quickly start job hunting in order to support a child. Nellie applied at Stall and Sons and was hired on the spot. She worked hard and saved in an effort to make life easier for Joanne. Nellie worked for almost 30 years until she suffered a stroke and was not able to work any more.
Despite many hardships, Nellie had a strength of character. She was not one to complain, but made a good life by hard work, quiet faith, a pleasant disposition and a generous soul. She was not one to mince words, but could give solid advice and had a profound outlook on life. She was a good listener, and enjoyed family and friends, with her daughter being her true treasure. In her younger years Nellie was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed gardening and caroling. We have been so fortunate and blessed to have her in our lives and will miss her love and support.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Holy Family Home and Dr. Taras Babick for their care and compassion. Also many thanks to Fr. Isidore Dziadyk, OSBM, Cantor Darryl Antoniw and the dedicated and caring staff at Cropo Funeral Chapel.
A private family service has already taken place.
Love leaves a memory no one can take away.
