Obituary of MARION KATHLEEN VOELLINGER
MARION KATHLEEN VOELLINGER
(nee GIVEN)
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and friend, Marion Voellinger, on Thursday, August 22, 2013 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She passed away peacefully at Northwood Centre with family close to her side.
Marion will be lovingly remembered by her children, Elizabeth and George Jr; and, her grandchildren, Alasdair and Calum.
Marion was predeceased by her husband, George, in 2004.
She was born in Winnipeg on May 6, 1926, the daughter of William Henry and Beatrice Alice Given. She grew up in St Boniface and completed her studies at St. Joseph’s Academy and the University of Manitoba (Faculty of Science, Class of 1946). She went on to work at the London Life Insurance Company and Eaton’s; teach school in Glenboro, Manitoba; and, work as a chemistry lecturer at United College (now University of Winnipeg). In the 1950s, she was an active member of the Winnipeg Spanish Club. In the 1950s, she thoroughly enjoyed a Spanish Club trip to Mexico, and a very memorable trip through Europe with a close friend. After she married in 1964 and had children, she worked for the Winnipeg School Division and volunteered in the community. In 2008, she moved to Fall River, Nova Scotia to be closer to her daughter and watch her grandsons grow up. She always enjoyed spending time with friends, travelling, baking, sewing, and knitting. Until she moved to Nova Scotia, she liked to walk in the mornings with friends at Garden City Shopping Centre. More recently, she enjoyed watching curling, playing gin rummy, working crypto quotes, reading and eating chocolate.
Special thanks to the staff of Willow Hall, Nova Scotia Hospital and 9th Floor Northwood Centre for the care and support over the last year.
A memorial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society in memory of Marion.
