Obituary of HAROLD WILFRED HADFIELD
Harold (Wilf) Wilfred Hadfield
April 15, 1923 – October 22, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Wilf Hadfield on October 22, 2013 at the age of 90. He was predeceased by his wife Perle (nee Saul), parents Edna and Frank, brothers Don and Harvey, sister’s Blanche, Phyllis and Edith and son-in-law John Joss. He is survived by his brother Charles, children: Allan (Inna), Linda and Ron (Jerry), grandchildren: Jackie and Jill and great grandchild: Christopher.
Dad grew up in Souris, Manitoba where he went to school and held various jobs like grocery deliver and stooking, until World War II. In 1943 he joined the Army and served with the Calgary Highlanders as a Bren gunner. He helped liberate Holland and fought in other parts of Europe. He first met his wife Perle on the train while heading overseas. They met again by chance after the war in Winnipeg and married on November 30, 1946. Dad worked as the autobody manager at Community Chev and later at Midway Chrysler.
Dad worked hard, was very active and had many interests and business ventures. He built a trailer for his family where they enjoyed many summers at Falcon Lake. In 1970, they purchased property in Beaconia Manitoba. In Beaconia, they operated a grain farm, an apiaries business, a trailer park and created plans for a cottage lot development.
Throughout their lives Dad and Mom hosted many parties, bonfires and family reunions. Upon retirement, Dad bought and converted the Beaconia School into a new home for himself and Mom. Dad also partnered a used car business with his son Allan and furniture store with his son Ron.
In 2003 Mom moved to Kildonan Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Dad moved to an apartment in the city to be closer to her and sold his Beaconia property. In his apartment block Dad made friends and participated in various activities.
Dad lived life to the fullest and was always there to help others. He loved his family and we loved him. He will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank all the home care and palliative care personnel who helped Dad, especially Eleanor.
