Obituary of Demetre ALEVIZOS

DEMETRE (JIM) ALEVIZOS It is with great sadness and love, with his family by his side, that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother and pappou Demetre (Jim) Alevizos on October 26, 2008. Demetre was predeceased by his parents Athanasios and Canstantina and his brother Vasili (Bill). He will be sadly missed by his wife Chrisoula, sons George and Tom, daughters-in-law Athena and Spiridoula and his pride and joy grandsons Michael, Demetre and Demetri. Demetre was born in Ayioi Theodori, Messinnias, Greece on May 5, 1937. In December of 1962 at age 25, he left Greece and immigrated to Winnipeg, with his brother Vasili, to join his brother Kosta (Gus). Demetre moved to and worked in Toronto for a number of years. It is in Toronto where he met his wife Chrisoula. After marriage, Demetre moved back to Winnipeg with his family. Over the next few years he was blessed with the birth of his son's Tom and George. Demetre worked tirelessly as a painter in northern Manitoba and Winnipeg providing for his family. Demetre's life centered around his family, friends and the Greek Community. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace General Hospital Emergency ward and 3rd floor West for their wonderful compassion and care. Prayers will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Avenue on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Coffee and snacks will be served after the prayer service. Funeral Services will be held at St. Demetrios on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Waverley Memorial Gardens at 1501 Waverley. Coffee and snacks will be served at St. Demetrios after the burial service. The family would like to request that in lieu of flowers, donations to be made in memory of Demetre (Jim) Alevizos to the Manitoba Hellenic Cultural Centre, 2255 Grant Avenue, R2P 0S0.
