Obituary of Nellie CHIN

With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Nellie Chin. Nellie passed away peacefully on August 15, 2011, surrounded by the love of her family. She will be lovingly remembered by her eight children, daughters -- Suzanne, Yvonne (Jim), Nancy (Bob), Cathy (Bob), Colleen (Sheldon), and Janice (Art), and sons -- Robert (Shannon) and Richard (Cindy). She will be dearly missed by her fifteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Nellie was predeceased by her husband Quen in 2005. Nellie was born in Vancouver BC, and married on October 6, 1945. She and Quen had a strong life long partnership of 59 years, raising their family on Burrows Avenue (surrounded by caring neighbours) in Winnipeg. While Quen ran the Ricksha family restaurant, Nellie was a wonderful and devoted mother. She was truly the heart of her family, living for the joy of family gatherings, and anticipating the next celebration. With a great reverence for tradition, she welcomed every child into the family, making everyone feel special and loved. Always encouraging, she was proud of every accomplishment made by her children, grand-children and great-grandchildren. She lived a full life, loved Chinese opera, dim sum , concerts, and travelling. She had a natural artistic flair and sense of style which was displayed through her calligraphy, painting, needlework, sewing and knitting. Nellie valued her family and friends and would often treat them to her superb chinese cooking or special meals at her favourite restaurant Kum Koon Garden. She so enjoyed these social gatherings and would quietly treasure every moment. She was a dignified and gracious lady, patient and caring, with a strong spirit. Her thoughtfulness, generosity and sense of humour was felt by everyone she met. Nellie lived the last few years of her life at Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence amongst wonderful friends, staff and Home Care workers. She received compassionate care for years from the St. Boniface dialysis and Cancer Care teams. Thank you to every medical professional and support staff in the community, as well as, at Tuxedo Villa, Deer Lodge Centre, WRHA, River View Health Centre, St. Boniface Hospital and Cancer Care Manitoba for their attentive care over the past few years. Also, with much appreciation to Handi-Helper, Wpg Handi-Transit and Medi-Van Services for their kindness. Our family greatly appreciates the support of our relatives, friends and acquaintances over the years. Nellie felt genuinely blessed to have known those she met along her life's journey. A service to celebrate Nellie's life will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 19th at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg. Interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or St-Boniface Hospital Foundation
