Obituary of Ryszard Girulski
Ryszard Girulski P. Eng, M. Eng
Peacefully in his sleep, after a long illness, Ryszard Girulski passed away on December 31, 2008 at Tuxedo Villa. Born October 19, 1926 in Brzesc, Poland, Ryszard was predeceased by his parents Antoni and Leokadia Girulski. He will be lovingly missed by his dearest wife Anna; children, Malgosia Friesen (John), Dorothy Vannan (Brad); and grandchildren, Suzanne, Kristina, and Mackenzie. Ryszard obtained his professional engineering degree and master's degree at Warsaw Politechnic. After graduating, he began his career in the Nuclear Energy Institute. He married Anna in 1952 and lived with his family in Warsaw. Following a successful twenty-year career, he immigrated with his family to Canada in 1972. He settled in Winnipeg and continued his engineering career with Manitoba Hydro, until his retirement. A highlight of his life during this time was the Jenpeg Project in northern Manitoba. Ryszard enjoyed many hobbies. As a ham-radio operator both in Poland (SP5QQ) and Canada (VE4FF), he had thousands of contacts all over the world illustrated by his collection of QSL cards. Ryszard always had a curious and inventive mind, and as early as the 1950's he used his engineering abilities to design and build a working television set while television broadcasting was still experimental. He was able to share his expertise in these areas by publishing books and articles about his discoveries. Ryszard was able to combine his love of travel and photography by taking vacations with Anna all over North America in his customized camper. Ryszard enjoyed serving the Polish community in Winnipeg. He contributed to "Polonika" on community television, and long before the advent of the Internet he made use of his interest in short wave radio to create his own telephone based news service that made up-to-date news available in the Polish language. In his later years, the onset of Parkinson's disease limited Ryszard's ability to pursue his hobbies and interests. The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa and Dr. Moran De Muller for their tireless and caring dedication in the face of chronic staffing shortages. They provided him with a safe and loving environment. We are thankful that Ryszard was able to spend Christmas Eve surrounded by family at the traditional Wigilia dinner. Mass in Ryszard's memory will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009 at 11:00 am at St. Ignatius Church, Father B. Massie S.J. Officiating. Reception to follow mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Manitoba, 302-171 Donald Street, Winnipeg.
