Obituary of Walter Harasymchuk
Walter Harasymchuk
It is with heavy hearts that Walter's family announces his passing on Friday, January 30, 2009 at the age of 89.
Dad will be sadly missed by his sons, Robert, Alan (Linda), Gary (Elaine), and his brother Frank (Mary) and sister Stella. Gido will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren; Kevin, Cheryl, Lisa (Mike), Carly and Charlene. Dad also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and long time friends.
Dad will be reunited with his late wife, Helen, who left us in 2005, his parents Katherine and Anthony, and his sisters Mary, Helen and Anne.
Walter was born in Winnipeg on August 19, 1920. His family decided to move to a farm in the Komarno area of Manitoba to be closer to relatives where he helped on the farm until he enlisted in the army to serve his country. After the war he returned home and set down roots in Winnipeg and met Helen at one of the many dances he attended, where according to legend he was a great dancer. After a brief courtship they married and together they raised their three sons. The family spent many weekends at their cottage at Nutimik Lake where the boys enjoyed hunting and fishing with their Dad. Following his retirement from WestRoc after 30 years, Dad and Mom travelled extensively in their motor home and in later years, Dad cared for Helen before she passed away.
Dad was a great father, generous, loving and kind. Time spent with the family was always Dad's favorite time and he prided himself on making every gathering a special occasion. He always made time to help out with our home renovations, to build furniture for us, or to take us fishing. Dad could build anything when he put his mind to it and he made sure to pass his knowledge and skills along to his boys. He built his first house, a boat, followed by a camping trailer, and then a cottage. After retirement he took up woodworking to keep himself busy, and everyone in the family has something hand built by Walter to remember him by.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter's memory can be made to the Holy Family Nursing Home, 165 Aberdeen Avenue Winnipeg, Manitoba R2W 1T9.
In keeping with dad's wishes, a private family service was held. Our memories of you will live on in our hearts forever.
