Obituary of VOLODYMYR PIDSOSNY
Volodymyr Pidsosny
Volodymyr Pidsosny was born January 30, 1964 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, at the Victoria Hospital to Peter and Molly Pidsosny. He was given the names at birth Sidney Edwin Johnny. Shortly thereafter he moved with his family to Regina, Saskatchewan. Volodymyr first attended Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor, Regina, Saskatchewan, from the age of two until he was five years of age with his paternal grandfather. Volodymyr moved to Churchill, Manitoba with his parents in 1969. At Churchill, Manitoba, Volodymyr (Sidney) Pidsosny attended kindergarten and grades 1-6 at Duke of Marlborough Elementary School. Volodymyr (Sidney) created a map of the moon with a used weather balloon at the Science Fair receiving the Young Explorer’s Award, June, 1977.
As a young child Volodymyr (Sidney) became increasingly interested in the Christian faith. Volodymyr, as a young teenager moved to Gimli, Manitoba living with the Alliance Pastor and his wife for a year while attending his first year of Junior High School, Grade 7. Soon after Volodymyr’s family purchased property and moved to Gimli. Volodymyr continued searching for God, and as his father Peter’s background was with the Catholic faith, he began investigating the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The evening of July 27, 1980, he accepted Chrismation at Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church and was given the Christian name Volodymyr. As a young teenager during grades 7-12 Volodymyr studied Ukrainian history, taking the Ukrainian language as a course every year. Grade 11, Volodymyr requested to be sent to St. Vladimir’s Minor Seminary, Roblin, Manitoba. Grade 12, Volodymyr was granted a visa to live with his parents in Salalah, Sultanate of Oman. While living in Salalah, Oman, Volodymyr studied Grade 12 by correspondence. Upon graduation Volodymyr returned to Canada and during 1983, Volodymyr was accepted at St. Sophia Seminary, Rome, Italy, by Patriarch Josef Cardinal Slipyj to study philosophy as a seminarian.
At the Urban University of Rome, Volodymyr completed his 1st year of Philosophy. The summer of 1984 Patriarch Josef Cardinal Slipyj fell asleep in the Lord. Volodymyr was then transferred to the Ukrainian Catholic Archdiocese of Winnipeg under Metropolitan Maxim Hermaniuk and sent to study at Holy Spirit Seminary in Ottawa, Ontario. At the University of Ottawa,Volodymyr completed a 2nd year of Philosophy during 1985. The summer of 1985 became a time of reflection and transition. Volodymyr began attending St. Stephen’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Pleasant Home near Fraserwood, Manitoba where his parents purchased a 12.5 acre hobby farm to retire to. Volodymyr accepted the Orthodox faith with the pastoral guidance of Father Timothy Minenko, 1985. The fall of 1986 Volodymyr was accepted as a theology student resident at St. Andrew’s College on the University of Manitoba Campus. Volodymyr completed two years of theology at St. Andrew’s College. During the summer months Volodymyr worked as camp manager and counselor at Veselka Ukrainian Orthodox Summer Camp. He also was the Vice President of CYMK (Ukrainian Orthodox Youth).At this time, Volodymyr attended various Orthodox Churches in Winnipeg, using his cantoring skills as needed. On June 13, 1993 Volodymyr was tonsured as a reader and then made a subdeacon at All Saints’ Parish by His Beatitude Metropolitan Wasyly, of thrice blessed memory. Searching for a parish centrally located in Winnipeg, SubdeaconVolodymyr moved to St. Ivan’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and was accepted with open arms by the parishioners of St. Ivan’s, faithfully serving for the last 11 years as their cantor and subdeacon, by singing the services and attending to the order, needs and beauty of the temple.
From September 14-30, 2008, SubdeaconVolodymyr travelled for the first time to Ukraine and Russia. He visited PecherskaLavra, Pochaiv Monastery and many of the Cathedrals in Kyiv. He visited, while in Moscow, Russia, many of the religious sites and churches.
In April 2009, SubdeaconVolodymyr made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land during Pascha. He visited Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, Jerusalem and Mount Sinai. Of late he completed studies at Hertzog College in Business Administration. During the last 3 years he had been employed as a front desk clerk at the various hotels. He was also employed as an interviewer at Data Probe Research. Prior to this SubdeaconVolodymyr worked as a reporter/writer for Visnyk. He also worked as an Immigration Consultant, at Glen Eden Funeral Home, and as a Cashier /Administration at various businesses. He volunteered as an Agape Canister Partner for the Orthodox Christian Mission Centre, a Blood Donor, donating more than 50 times and at Health Sciences Centre in Chaplaincy Services.
On November 3, 2008, SubdeaconVolodymyr, by the Grace of God, recovered from congestive heart failure. He learned from this experience to live each day with deep faith and trust in the loving benevolence of Our Saviour.He continued to serve at St. Ivan’s faithfully until his untimely passing on January 25, 2011.
SubdeaconVolodymyr is predeceased by his father, Peter John Pidsosny, grandfather, Stephan Pidsosny, grandmother Josephine Pidsosny, grandfather John Legebokoff. He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved mother, Molly, sister Deborah (Brian), nephews, great nieces and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, extended family, friends and his church family at St. Ivan’s.
The family is so very grateful and thankful for St. Ivan’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral for welcoming and caring for ‘Vloko’. He truly found his home in Christ with you. A special thank you for Fr. Gene Maximiuk for his generous support and loving kindness.
Prayers will be said on Monday, January 30 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Ivan Suchavsky Cathedral, 939 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 31 also at the Cathedral with Rev. Fr. Gene Mazimiuk presiding. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Ivan’s Suchavsky Cathedral in memory of SubdeaconVolodymyr.
