Obituary of Doreen MARSHALL
DOREEN WISHART MACDONALD MARSHALL
(NE CALDER)
1931-2009
Peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on June 15, 2009. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doreen was pre-deceased by her parents Godfrey, and Jean Wishart Calder. She leaves to mourn her beloved husband, Harold, of 50 years, and loving son Angus.
Doreen was the anchor in their lives and she was cherished by them. She encouraged and supported them in every way. To all who knew Doreen, hers was the gift of gentle persuasion and she spread a contagion of kindness, generosity and compassion that was in harmony with who she was. Hers was a true friendship for all who knew her. In many respects, Doreen was a Renaissance person who accomplished many things in her life without fanfare, and that is how she preferred it; from honing her carpentry skills to build the family rec room, to her proficiency in accounting. Of a curious and enquiring mind, Doreen sought after thorough knowledge. She was a volunteer for the Cancer Society for several years, an avid gardener who researched the plants she grew. She was an excellent cook, from family fare to gourmet. Doreen was a prize-winning golfer at her home club in Edinburgh. She was at the forefront of environmental issues long before these came into public consciousness. Doreen enjoyed travel and lived for a time in Africa and later in the Caribbean. She and Harold travelled throughout the U.K., parts of the Middle East, and Europe - especially to the Mediterranean and Baltic countries. True to her cultural roots Doreen enjoyed Scottish Country Dancing and continued doing so right up to the end. She valued the friendship of the many friends she had there. Doreen returned to Edinburgh every year to travel around the Scotland she loved, and to visit with long-time friends and family. If memories are the gems of memory, Doreen has left behind a precious motherlode. Doreen was a "parfait gentil ladye." Hers was the gift of giving.
Thanks to Dr. Robin McClure and all the staff at Riverview, and especial thanks to Nurse Amanda Wilson. No funeral service by request. Cremation has taken place.
