Obituary of EMILY HASINOFF
Emily Hasinoff
November 8, 1917 – February 15, 2012
" To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die" -- Scottish poet Thomas Campbell
Our beloved mother, Emily, passed away at the age of 94, with family by her side, at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg.
Left to cherish her memory are her five sons: Michael, Lorne (Donna), Murray (Suzanne), Jim, and Ian (Susan). She was a proud grandmother to her 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Emily was predeceased by her loving husband Earl (1981), only daughter Shirley (2006), son-in-law Bob Nagy (1977), daughter-in law Cathy (Michael) (2004), brother Ben (2001) and sisters Gen (1999) and Jo (1991).
Mom was born on Nov 8, 1917 near Edmonton to Michael Czernega and Mary Caruk, At 15 she took over the care of her family after her mother passed away. At 17 she moved to Winnipeg to train as a hairdresser. She married Dad in 1939.
Our memories of her include: always putting her family first, her spectacular flower and vegetable gardens, her sewing and knitting skills, her wonderful cooking, tea and long talks around the kitchen table, her laugh, her smile, the house on Rossmere Crescent that she designed - a home filled with dogs, cats, family and friends.
Mom was proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s academic achievements and awards. She was fiercely proud of her independence. Until January 3rd, she maintained her own home and gardens, cared for Shirley’s dog Coco, and would drive herself to appointments, for groceries, and to the Symphony with Pat. We were all very proud of her.
Mom was thrilled that family members visited with her in person and over the phone during her last weeks. The family is sincerely grateful for the exceptional care and compassion she received from the staff of Concordia Hospital, and from Dr. Cindy Pachal, physician and friend for many years. To Pat Patterson, a dear friend and symphony buddy, and our cousin Kathleen Gillis, our deepest appreciation for your love and support.
At Emily’s request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Remember Emily with a donation in her memory to a charity that cares for animals or children, or by planting a garden, recycling, or enjoying the Winnipeg Symphony,
