Obituary of Ada MELNYK

ADA MELNYK 1921 - 2011 On July 2, 2011 at Beacon Hill Lodge beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 89. Ada was born on November 28, 1921 in Roblin, MB. At the age of seven the family moved to Kamsack, SK. When Ada became 18, she moved to Dauphin, MB. During World War II she served meals at the Rex and Liberty Cafes. After the War, Ada moved to the Point Douglas area of Winnipeg. It was at one of the Point Douglas dances that she met and eventually fell in love with Harry Melnyk. They married on October 16, 1948 and experienced 58 wonderful years together. Harry was the love of her life! Ada became a very accomplished seamstress and was employed at places like Victoria Leather and Richlu Sportswear. In her spare time she liked to bowl, play bingo, dance, watch General Hospital, have coffee with the neighbors, and watch her sons play sports. Happy and gregarious are the best words to describe Ada. She loved to host out of town relatives and family dinners. And being of English descent, Ada became one of the best Ukrainian cooks in the extended family. Her perogies were second to none! Ada spent the last four and one half years at Beacon Hill Lodge. The staff at Beacon Hill were outstanding in every way, especially on the ninth floor. They are so caring, supportive and friendly. Ada is survived by her two sons Harold (Gwen) and Barry (Valerie) along with grandchildren Ryan, Karleigh (Greg), and Maria and great grandchildren Evan and Brett. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Rt. Rev. John A. Melnyk (Sonia) and sisters-in-law Anne Yakemow, Nettie Melnyk and Kay Clarke. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces. Ada was predeceased by her husband Harry, parents Mary and Gus Clarke, brothers George, Isaac (Yvonne), Ted (Tillie) and sister Nellie MacPhail (Jack) and brothers-in-law Dan Melnyk and Bill Yakemow. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 6, at 12:00 noon at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street with Rt. Rev. John A. Melnyk officiating. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
