Obituary of MARGARET SOPHIA MILLER DOUGLAS

MARGARET SOPHIA MILLER DOUGLAS (Rita) Margaret Sophia Miller Douglas (nee Martin) passed peacefully on February 21, 2012. Born on August 21, 1924 to Walter Charles Martin and Grace (Kessel) in Farnborough, Hampshire, England. She was the youngest of three siblings, Raymond, Mary, and Thomas (Pinch). On completion of her schooling, the Netball Champion took employment at a dress shop. When World War II broke out, Rita went to work at a bomb factory. She was very proud to serve her country. She met a tall handsome Canadian soldier named Elvin Miller at a dance hall in 1941. They were wed August 22, 1942, the day after her 18th birthday. Along with many young "War Brides" and their children, who left their families and country behind, Rita and her oldest daughter Jeannie (1944), arrived at Halifax on August 13, 1946 aboard the HMS Letitia. Disembarking off the boat they came west to Winnipeg by train. Shortly after arriving in Winnipeg, she and Elvin bought their Logan Ave. home. Rita and Elvin were busy setting up home and having more children, George in 1948, Perry in 1952 and Rita in 1956. After a lengthy illness, Elvin predeceased her in 1973. She continued on and enjoyed the company of her family and friends. Rita was an avid knitter and would always tell the story of learning to knit in kindergarten. In later years she also produced some wonderful pictures with her needlepoint skill. Rita enjoyed playing cards, bowling, darts, singing, dancing, bingo, gambling trips and was a great baker of pies. Traveling, especially back home to England and family, was also a great joy. In 1964, Rita went to work for Midland School and Office Supply, until she retired. It was about this time she started keeping company with Bill Douglas. They were married on August 6, 1993 and shared many happy years together. They were always busy with Queenie in Winnipeg or going for walks at the cabin at Traverse Bay. She had a tremendous thirst for a good cup of tea. Other favorites were crumpets with lots of butter, clotted cream and scones, cold left over pizza for breakfast, and the occasional glass of red wine. She treasured her life long friendships with Hilda, Ollie, Rose, Phyllis and Betty. She leaves this life, and will be missed, but remembered fondly and with love, by her husband Bill, daughters Jeannie (Ed), Rita (Colin), sons George (Wendy), Perry (Val), niece Ann, nephew Brian, step-son Ron, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held. If friends so desire donations in memory of Mom, should be made to a charity of one's choice.
