Obituary of Frederick NYQUVEST

FREDERICK CHARLES NYQUVEST November 26, 1922-May 5, 2010 Fred passed away peacefully at the age of 87. He leaves behind his wife Marjorie, was predeceased by his daughter, Glenna and survived by his sons Terry (Donna), Shayne (Hilda) and daughter Shirley (Brian). He also leaves 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Fred comes from a generation of tough hardworking individuals - he always felt it was a privilege to go to work and not a chore. He survived a depression and worked for many years for little money cutting wood in the bush to survive. He never complained about those years but later stories to us described how difficult they were and the stories were told factually not to complain. He escaped those lean years by joining the army where "a guy could get 3 square meals a day and a small income - all you had to do was go across an ocean and risk your life every day. He joined the Winnipeg Rifles serving with the prestigious "little black devils" and received many medals but more important lived to return home with his war bride "Marjorie" and begin a new life. Dad worked as a bus boy in hotels after the war and eventually through hard work, long hours and sheer determination he became the famous "Freddie from the factors table at the Fort Garry hotel". quite an accomplishment for a fellow with only a grade 6 education. His flamb�s were amazing and he packed the dining room. He worked at the Fort Garry till his retirement and lived to enjoy many years of the "good life", enjoying every day for whatever it brought his way. He was very sociable and made many friends along the way. He spent the last 5 years at Sterling House, which he loved - the staff was awesome and he made new and wonderful friends to sit and chat with. He could be found in the afternoons in his favourite chair in the hall waiting for someone to join him and chat. Thanks to the staff and his friends for their support. His last few months were spent at Tuxedo Villa and we thank them for their care and compassion. Dad was a quiet man of great physical strength - he was fortunate to have very few sick days until his stroke at 84 and even then he hit rehab with determination and a positive attitude and he came through if not perfect - much improved. The family will be respecting dad privately and there will be no formal service. If dad passed your way in his life, please remember him with a smile and a fond memory of time shared with him. Dad lived a good full life, survived much and enjoyed a lovely retirement. We should all be so lucky!!
