William Popowich

Obituary of William Popowich

Peacefully on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, William (Bill) Popowich passed away at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife Effie (1996) and their infant daughter (1944). Left to cherish his memory are his children June Shymko (Nick), Adeline Yaremkiewich (Donnie), and Julian (Barbara); grandchildren Brent, Blair, and Mark (Carrie); Tanya (Carlos), Tara (Kevin), and Tina; Kristi, Stacey (Eric), Craig, and Darrell; great-grandchildren Bethany and Adam; Theresita, Carlos, Erica and Ashtyn; and Delaney. Born in Rembrandt in 1917, Bill was the oldest of ten children. He was predeceased by his parents Nicholas and Katherine, brothers Les and George, and sister Anne. He leaves to mourn his passing his siblings, Mary, Rose, Jean, Julian, Mildred, and Adeline. He is also survived by his Auntie Teenie and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Music was an important part of his life, having played the violin at numerous barn dances, weddings and other social events throughout the Interlake. His children remember fondly his impromptu concerts at the kitchen table. Bill took pride in his skills as a carpenter, but he was most proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In retirement, Bill became creative in his culinary skills and mastered, among other things, the art of perogy-making. Several of his grandchildren were lucky to have learned these perogy-making techniques directly from the master. Another one of his pleasures were his daily trips to the Garden City Mall for coffee with the gang. It is here that they solved the world's problems. The family would like to thank Dr. Warraich and the nursing staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for their care and compassion. Our sincere thanks also to the Amber Meadow staff, home care workers and friends who welcomed Bill into their community. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, May 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg with Fr. John A. Melnyk officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Rembrandt, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Vichnaya Pam'yat
