WALTER ALFRED STEKLER (Big Wally) 1924-2010
Peacefully, on Friday, February 12, 2010, Wally passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 85 years.
Wally will be greatly missed by his wife and soul mate Nettie, daughter Debbie, sons, Larry and David, grandchildren, Kyle and Meghan, his sister Martha and many nieces and nephews.
Wally was predeceased by his parents Ludwig and Anna, sisters; Kathleen and Lillian (Clifford) and brothers; Albert (Anne), Arthur and Ernie (Ollie).
Wally's first career was in the fur business. He then moved on to a position at CPR Rail Weston Shops where he enjoyed the rest of his working days and then retired in 1988.
Wally loved to camp and fish and traveled all over the country visiting relatives and friends. He was very involved with his children and their sporting activities. He loved to build things, fix things, and collected everything that was known to mankind. His main passion in later years was going to his cottage on Lake Winnipeg where he worked very hard maintaining the property and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. After he retired, Wally and Nettie became Snow Birds and enjoyed going to Naples, Fl. in the winter and his cottage in the summer.
A memorial service will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. 1442 Main Street in Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
The family extends their heart filled appreciation to a wonderful, supportive and compassionate staff at Deer Lodge Center, 3 West Special Care Unit. The love and dedication that "Big Wally" received in the last 4 years of his journey will always remain special in our hearts. There are no words that can express our gratitude to a truly awesome staff.
