Obituary of Derek TWOMEY
DEREK JAMES TWOMEY
August 26, 1989 - January 30, 2011
Accidentally and far too early, Derek James passed away at the young age of 21.
Through his years attending Hastings School and Dakota Collegiate, he gained many amazing friends. He was loyal to all his friends but will be most sorely missed by John Laxdal, Trevor Angus, Steve Gossen, Brett Maurice, and Spencer Weisensel. This unique group created many rich memories. His long time girlfriend, Danielle Kaplan, brought out the very best in him. They were on a journey, sharing and growing together. Energetic, gifted, and athletic, Derek excelled at many sports and his passion was volleyball. The opportunity to play and learn under the strength of Coach Phil Hudson solidified Derek's choice to become a one sport athlete. After high school, his love of the game took him to Camosun College in Victoria where in his first year, he received Rookie of the Year. In his second year, they won the BCCAA championship and went on to place third at Nationals. This was a highlight of Derek's life. Derek made many great friends in Victoria and loved and respected Coach Charles Parkinson, who not only helped him as a player but helped him grow as a person. Derek was passionate about volleyball but he lived and breathed the lake. He spent every summer of his life at Gustafson's Resort on Long Bow Lake in Kenora. He was truly the happiest there.
Left to cherish Derek's precious memory are his mom Donna, dad Brian, younger sister Kara, grandmother Muriel Posnick, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The family would like to express their sincere thanks for all the love and support through this trying time.
A trust fund has been set up in the Twomey name with TD Canada Trust at 2030 Corydon Avenue to be put towards a youth volleyball scholarship.
A celebration of Derek's life will be held at the Immanuel Pentecostal Church, 955 Wilkes Avenue, on Monday, February 7, 2011 at 3:00 p.m.
Love you always buddy!
