Obituary of Ann YAKOWCHUK

ANN YAKOWCHUK (nee Woloshyn) November 12, 1936 - March 6, 2011 Peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre, Ann passed away at the age of 74 years. Ann successfully battled neck (throat) cancer for 6 years. In April of 2007 she overcame a stroke and heart problems. On May 26, 2010 she developed double pneumonia. Ann spent the last 8 � months at Seven Oaks Hospital and Health Sciences Centre with her final days at Deer Lodge Centre, where she succumbed to respiratory illness. Ann will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her partner of 35 years, Ron Borys and by her son Ken Yakowchuk. She is also survived by her brothers Edward, Len (Holly); sister Jean (Karl) Redlick of Biggar, SK; aunt Mary Zdrill; sister-in-law Jean Woloshyn; brother-in-law Lawrence Gera of Saskatoon; many cousins, nieces and nephews and ex-husband Victor Yakowchuk. She was predeceased by her father, William Woloshyn; step fathers Adam Sliworsky, Frank Kaminski, mother Nettie Kaminski; brothers Stan, Ray, Harry and sister Minnie Gera. Ann was born in Brokenhead, MB on November 12, 1936. Ann lived on a farm in Allegra, MB as a young girl. Times were tough on the farm, so the family then moved to Transcona in 1944, where Ann grew up. On October 13, 1956, Ann married Vic Yakowchuk who was in the Air Force. They were later transferred to Europe. While in Europe, Ann had the opportunity to visit many countries. Ann's greatest joy in life came to her while they were stationed in Germany, where her son Ken was born on January 12, 1961. Upon their return to Canada, Ann was employed by banks, Credit Unions and then Manitoba Pool Elevator until her early retirement to become a permanent homemaker. She later took a part time job as a waitress and bartender at St. John Cantius Polish Society. Ann was very friendly, had a pleasant personality and a great smile, earning her the nickname as the "Bubbly One" by one of her employers. Ann was a kind and generous person. She enjoyed cooking and was an excellent cook. She was well known for her tasty perogies, cabbage rolls and other ethnic dishes she learned while in Europe. Ann enjoyed company and when football season came around she spent many Sundays cooking for Ron, Ken and friends while they watched N.F.L. football. No one left the house hungry. In her younger years, Ann loved 5 pin bowling and won some trophies. She enjoyed watching soap operas, especially "The Young and the Restless", and good movies, comedies and the Blue Bombers. Ron and Ken would like to thank the staff on the 6th floor-West Wing at Deer Lodge Centre for their care of Ann. They would also like to thank Dr. Kerr, staff, doctors and nurses and all other staff of surgical ICU at Health Sciences Centre; all the doctors and nurses of ICU, Seven Oaks Hospital, Dr. Moncek, all the nurses and staff on 5th floor, unit 5 at Seven Oaks Hospital for their loving and compassionate care of Ann. Also thanks to Dr. Leylek Dr. Maksymiuk and again Dr. Kerr of CancerCare Manitoba. Special thanks to Candace Meyers of CancerCare for all her great support. Also to Patti Thomson and nurse Elaine of Home Nutrition Program for their great help. Thanks to Dr. Haligowski and nurse Judy at Rivergrove Medical Clinic. In keeping with Ann's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private service was held. A private gathering with interment will follow at Transcona Cemetery at a later date. If friends and relatives so desire, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, Heart and Stoke Foundation of Manitoba, The Lung Association, Seven Oaks Hospital, Health Sciences Centre or a charity of one's choice.
