(KATCHINOSKI)
With deep sadness and fond memories we announce the passing of Phyllis on January 2, 2014 at Riverview Health Centre.
Phyllis is survived by her loving daughters, Theresa of Winnipeg and Elizabeth of Raleigh, North Carolina. She also leaves nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.
She was predeceased by her parents Stephen and Mary Katchinoski, her three brothers and four sisters and her beloved husband Max in January of 2005.
Phyllis was born in Dand, Manitoba on October 1, 1928 and shortly after moved - growing up in Fannystelle. After high school Phyllis enrolled in the St. Boniface School of Nursing graduating with a gold medal when she received her RN. After working a few years she met and married Max in 1956, moved to Fort Garry and had her two daughters. After devoting herself to their early years she returned to studies and received her Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Manitoba in 1970. She then worked at Red River Community College as a nursing instructor and spearheaded the experiential learning program. After 22 years she retired in 1992 and kept very busy engaged in her many interests and hobbies which included gardening, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint. bicycling, cooking and baking. She always found time to care for others and welcomed them into her home no matter how tired or busy she was. She was a women of deep faith who put God and others first. She was a member of the Catholic Women's League for 25 years always finding the time to donate baby crafts or help out at funerals at church. She was very appreciative and never complained, always grateful and thankful for what she had even when faced with illness and sadness. She was a devoted wife and mother. Family and friends would come to her for advice and hospitality. She radiated a sense of happiness, enthusiasm and joy de vivre. She enjoyed striving for academic excellence in education, the arts, including the ballet, symphony and the opera. From sewing a lost button, to painting furniture or housecleaning she made work fun. Her joyful personality of kindness, patience and caring will always be missed but forever remembered. She was an inspiration of hope and faith for all who knew her.
Thank you dear mom for gifts both tangible and intangible. While you left behind beautiful crafts for us to use and enjoy we equally remember you for your gifts of inspirational wisdom and love including the love you showed our pets. Thank you for all your beautiful memories we shared from shopping together, celebrating the Holidays and the visits with dad to North Carolina.
We wish to extend our thanks to her dear friend of 22 years at Red River College, Josie Winter for her care and support of Phyllis and to the staff of CD 2 at Riverview Health Centre who cared for Phyllis with a special thank you to nurse Pia for ensuring her comfort and cheer in her final days.
Thank you also to Dr. Craig Hildahl, her family physician, her niece Laura Leggott of Oakton, Virginia and Ian from the Pastoral Care Department at St. Boniface Hospital. We also wish to extend our thanks to Monsignor Comeault for providing pastoral care and visits to mom and taking care of her sacramental needs.
In our sad loss we know that this beautiful woman has gone home to God. We entrust her now to Christ or Saviour in the belief of the Resurrection where we hope in faith to meet again. We will remember you carrying your love in our hearts. Thank you mom for everything. With deepest gratitude we will love you always and forever dearest mom Phyllis
