Obituary of BARRY WAYNE DERLAGO
BARRY WAYNE DERLAGO
April 6, 1951 to January 15, 2014
Peacefully at home, with his loving wife and children by his side, Barry passed away at the age of 62 after a 12 year battle with cancer.
Barry was born in Halifax and moved to Winnipeg at the age of seven. He grew up in Old Kildonan and continued to live and raise his family there.
Barry was known for his caring, generous, upbeat personality, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand. The most important thing in his life was his family, and his favourite times were those they spent together.
He met his wife and best friend Linda in 1972 and for the rest of his life they were inseparable. Their two children, Jordan and Ashley, were his pride and joy. Barry was never happier than when he was coaching their teams and watching them in sports and dance. He was their number one fan and attended every event.
Barry loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing and cheering on the Bombers and Jets. He was also actively involved in the community and worked for Sobeys for many years, at a job he loved.
In recent years he explored destinations like Italy and France with Linda at his side. He also treasured some memorable holidays with his children, such as a Grey Cup weekend with Jordan and a trip to Florida as Ashley trained at a special dance camp.
These fond memories will be cherished by Linda, Jordan and Ashley, brothers Ron (Bea) and Laurie, sister Debbie Skelton (Gary), in-laws Kathy Granger, Gail Granger, Heather Ferguson, nieces and nephews Ryan, Jeremi, Amber, Kari, Jillian and all of Barry’s extended family, as well as his granddog Nea. He was predeceased by his parents Lawrence and Dorothy. He will be missed tremendously by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the doctors and amazing chemotherapy nurses who have taken such good care of Barry all these years. We would also like to extend our thanks to all friends and family who have provided assistance, good wishes and many beautiful messages the past few weeks.
A memorial service celebrating Barry’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014 at Kildonan Community Church, 2373 Main St. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Barry’s name to CancerCare Manitoba.
