If my memory serves me correctly, Cory and I became friends in 1979 whilst attending Earl Grey School in Winnipeg. He had two younger brothers, Ian and Gregory, the latter we called 'Giggy'. His parents Debbie and Harold were very warm, kind, welcoming and supportive parents and I recall on countless Saturdays piling into the Gartner van heading off in -25 degree weather to ice hockey tournaments in and around Winnipeg. We played hockey for several years together and one day the sad news had reached me that the Gartner's were moving.
One of the last things we did together, almost as a family, was attend a Winnipeg Warrior's game at the old Winnipeg Arena, sometime in the early-mid 80s. We lost contact with each other and met up once or twice in our 20s, this was the last time I saw Cory.
Cory, thanks for the friendship and the wonderful memories.
May your happy and friendly soul rest in peace.
Respectfully,
Omar van den Berg

I went to school with Cory in St. Norbert too. He was always so much fun, and very kind. My sympathies to all of his loved ones. Rest in peace Cory.
