Obituary of DR. REGINALD A. GALLOP

DR. REGINALD A. GALLOP June 27, 1924 – March 30, 2014 After a brief illness, at the age of 89, Reg passed away peacefully at Grace Hospital on March 30, 2014 with his wife, Pat, at his side. Reginald (Reg) A. Gallop was born June 27, 1924 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was predeceased by his parents, Josephine (Pike) and Herbert Gallop, and siblings Agnes (White), Raphael, Clare (Johnston), all of Australia, and a grandson, Bryan. Reg was also predeceased by his first wife Alma Mary (Gelston) in 2000 after 48 years of marriage. Reg leaves to mourn their children Elizabeth Huntley (Buddy), Damien Gallop (Ella), Maria Fairlie (Bryn), Karen Humeau-Gallop (Jean-Marie), Monica Biggar (Paul), and Paul Gallop (Lucy). As well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his brother, Lawrence Gallop. In 2003, Reg met Pat Pelham and they were married in 2005. Reg also leaves to mourn his stepchildren; Stacey Brandow (Roy) and Aubrey Brandow (Song). Reg loved to reminisce about growing up in Australia and the many pranks he loved to play on his friends and siblings. He often recalled with great joy tales of his mischievous youth; many of them fondly recorded with the hope of maintaining the family tradition. Experimenting with chemicals, inventing things, and understanding how things work became a passion for him that developed into his career in chemistry and food technology and was a part of many of his hobbies. In his pre-university studies, Reg was tutored by the Christian Brothers which enabled him to gain entrance into the Sydney Technical College where he later studied Chemical Sciences. During the war, he worked as a lab technician in developing portable food rations for soldiers. As he continued his academic studies, he met and married Mary Gelston in 1952 and they later moved to Oregon, USA with their young family. Reg earned his doctorate in Food Sciences and Technology from Oregon State University. His studies and research positions took the young family all over the world, from Tasmania to Corvallis (Oregon), Chipping Campden (England), Fredericton (New Brunswick), and finally to Winnipeg. In 1966, Reg secured employment as the first Department Head (Dean) of Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba, and he retired in 1989 after 23 years of service. Reg loved his work, especially working with colleagues and students on research projects and improving water processes in food processing plants. He enjoyed finding solutions to all sorts of technical problems. Reg was a man of great faith and was devoted to the Roman Catholic Church. His training in Catholic Apologetics, taught him how to defend the faith. Reg brought a deep appreciation of the faith to all who knew him. In 1984 Reg was introduced to lilies and instantly became a self-quoted “lily addict.” His passion for lilies became a life-time hobby, providing him with many hours of enjoyment at his summer home at Victoria Beach, Manitoba. He appreciated his many friends in the local lily community, the North American Lily Society and others whom he corresponded with online. Reg found love a second time with his wife, Pat. They were strong faith companions, and enjoyed eight beautiful years of marriage. Their times at the cottage with friends and family brought them much happiness. Visitation and prayers will take place on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 9:30 a.m., St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street. Donations in Reg’s memory may be made to: Campaign Life Coalition Manitoba.
