Obituary of KAZIMIERA GIGIEL
KAZIMIERA (KAY) GIGIEL
Peacefully, at home, while holding her beloved grandson’s hand, Kazimiera (Kay) passed away on April 29, 2012, after a short battle with cancer.
Kazimiera was born in Sambor, Poland on May 8, 1933. In 1957, Kazimiera married her husband Stanisław, and their first son, John, was born in 1958. In 1960, the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, where their second son, Robert, was born in 1967. In 2010, Kay’s husband, Stan, passed away after 52 years of marriage. Easing the sadness of the loss of her husband, Kay realized her long-time dream of becoming a Grandmother in January of 2011 with the birth of her first grandchild.
In addition to her husband Stanisław, Kazimiera was predeceased by her mother in Poland and her estranged father in Winnipeg. Kay is survived by her son John and wife Terisa; son Robert and wife Renata Urbanik and their son Mitchell.
Although Kay was primarily a housewife and homemaker, she also worked full-time to help support her family. During her first nine years in Winnipeg, Kay worked as a cook at Holy Family Nursing Home. After that, Kay worked at M&S Meat Market on Main Street for a number of years. Kay completed her working years, again as a cook, at the University of Manitoba until her retirement in 1993.
A faithful member of Holy Ghost Parish since arriving in Winnipeg, Kazimiera's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Ghost Church, 341 Selkirk Avenue, on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will be held one half-hour before Mass at Holy Ghost Church beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery.
Kay wished to expressly thank her good friends Teresa Morga and Bronisława Owczarz for bringing her soups, dinners, desserts and baking, once her illness made her too weak to cook for herself. Kay also wished to thank all the Palliative Care nurses and home health care workers for their excellent care, kindness and compassion.
Flowers are welcomed, or in lieu of, donations can be made in Kay's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of one’s choice.
