Of course, your Dad is 9 years older than I am, so that he was a young adult when I was a young boy. But he understood that I would understand the turmoil of those years, the changing loyalties and allegiances that were forced on him and the bitterness of the aftermath of that war. Also, the idiocy of the whole conflict we saw rather clearly with the benefit of hindsight.
But all is well that ends well, and it had obviously ended well for your Dad upon his arrival in Canada 63 years ago, as it did for our family 62 years ago, in Winnipeg.
We will miss him this September and the many Septembers to follow.
Sincerely yours,
Fred and Eva West

We were saddened to learn yesterday that your Dad has passed away and forward our deepest condolences to your Mom and you and family.
As you will know, your Dad had been somewhat of an icon among his classmates for what is now more than 50 years, and it is with great regret that we will not be seeing him this mid-September when we will gather in Winnipeg to mark the 50th anniversary of graduating.
I like to think that your Dad and I had a somewhat special relationship since we both lived through the last years of the war, and at a lunch we shared last year in Winnipeg we exchanged some of our personal experiences of this era in more detail than we had done before. Your Dad attended university in Berlin, as I recall, and spoke German exceptional well, well enough to tell jokes in German and appreciate stories I would share with him in German. He evidently lived at times in four languages, which is a significant achievement.

I can't imagine services at Holy Ressurection without the presence of Basil. Because I don't speak Russian, Basil was always quick to find English translations for me to chant throughout the services and greatly encouraged my humming along with the choir. As a convert, I always appreciated his warm welcome and his explanations. I will miss Basil when I go to church.

I was saddened to learn today of the passing of Professor Basil Rotoff. Basil was my master's thesis advisor in City Planning School at the University of Manitoba, and one of my favorite professors. Being both an engineer and city planner, his practical approach to urban design and problem solving had a big influence on my own professional practice and career.
My sincere condolences to the Rotoff family. Rest in peace my friend.

Please accept my condolences. Basil was a very important influence for me, and a delight to be around. He was on my hiring committee when I joined the City Planning Department at the University of Manitoba... I felt him to be a great supporter of what we were doing, and he was a real support for myself at various times. I also very much enjoyed the 'gigs' he arranged for my singing group, Brochan Lom, to help the folks at Sterling House celebrate Robert Burns... he even wore an appropriate funny hat! I am sorry I cannot be there in person to say goodbye - I am currently on leave in Adelaide South Australia. It's an experience I would have enjoyed telling Basil about... he will be missed, but we should celebrate a great life, well-lived, and a great contribution on many fronts. Sincerely, Ian Wight.

My condolences go out to the Rotoff family. As a high school friend of Basil's son, Andrew, I had the pleasure of becoming friends with Basil and the rest of the Rotoff family. Basil was an impressive man with great life experience. He had a presence that was undeniable and never failed to bring laughter with his enthusiastic and captivating stories and jokes. Basil's ability with languages, his spirituality, and his intelligence set him apart from the crowd and ensured that everyone who met him remembered him. Basil left a positive impression on many people and will be missed.
