Obituary of RICHARD CHARLES HUGHES
RICHARD CHARLES HUGHES
June 12, 1931 – May 1, 2014
After a brief but courageous battle with cancer and his family by his side, Richard passed away at home at the age of 82.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife Claire who took gentle loving care of him through their 39 years of marriage and his palliative care until his passing. Richard is survived by his sons, Rick (Tammy) and Jeff (Dyanne), step-daughters Julie (Rick) and Claudette (Rob) and seven granddaughters and five great grandchildren, brother Bob, sister Gayle (Francis) and sister-in-law Jackie.
He was predeceased by his parents Richard and Annie Eugenia, brother Ken, sister-in-law June.
Richard was born in Hamilton, Ontario, graduated from McMaster University and worked for five years at Studebaker followed by 27 years at Burroughs Business Machines then opened his own business Hughes Computers and Consulting which he operated until his second retirement.
Dad loved golfing, going to the cottage and most especially his trips to Las Vegas. He was an avid gardener who nurtured his large rose garden and spent many hours with Mom caring for their large yard full of flowers. His favorite song was ‘A Summer Place’ and when-ever he heard it he would take his ‘darlings’ (Mom) into his arms and dance around the house. He loved listening to jazz and big band music and watching golf, hockey and football on television sometimes all three simultaneously!
The family expresses deep gratitude to the wonderful caregivers and support from Dr. Hartley and the WRHA Palliative Care Team who worked diligently with Mom to honour Dad’s wish to die at home surrounded by vases of deep pink roses from his loving family.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4588 Roblin Blvd on Tuesday, May 6 at 11:00am officiated by Msgr. Maurice Comeault. A private family interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the WRHA Palliative Care Donation Fund (Fund #336) c/o HSC Foundation, 107-820 Sherbrook St. Wpg. MB R3A 1R9 or a charity of one’s choice.
