Obituary of ANTONI HASKIEWICZ

ANTONI (TONY) HASKIEWICZ With heavy hearts we announce the very unexpected passing of our husband, tata (dad) and dziadek (grandpa), Antoni Haskiewicz on Sunday, May 4th, 2014 at the age 70. He leaves behind to mourn his beloved wife of 25 years Jadwiga-Jeannie; his children, Mark (Ala), Elizabeth (Frank) Liska, Dianne (John) Casar and Andrew; his grandchildren Justyn and Evan Haskiewicz, Izabella and Rozalia Casar, Erica Liska and Justin Weber. He also leaves his siblings, Jozefa Pogorzelec of Calgary; Kazimiera (Franciszek) Ryczan, Zygmunt (Krystyna) and sister-in-law Janina Haskiewicz all of Poland; his mother-in-law Stanislawa Gawinski, brothers-in-law Miro (Dianne) and Les Gawinski as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and Poland; honorary brothers and very close friends. He was predeceased by his parents Jan and Rozalia, brother Henryk and first wife Helena. Born November 25, 1943 in Mizyniec, Poland he completed his machinist certification before arriving in Winnipeg in 1966. He began working for CP Rail upon his arrival in Canada and continued to work there until his retirement in 1997. Bog, Honor i Ojczyzna (God, Honour and Homeland) were the words he lived by. He was proud of his faith and Polish heritage, which he instilled in all of his children and grandchildren. One of his last outings was to celebrate 3-ci Maj (Poland’s Constitution Day) at Polish Saturday School where two of his granddaughters were performing. Tony was a long-time member of Holy Ghost Parish; a proud member of Sokol Winnipeg for over 25 years and for the past 16 years was a very active member of Royal Canadian Legion Winnipeg Polish Branch #246, where he held various positions on the executive. Tata was always a person who preferred to give rather than to receive and said that honesty was the best policy. He was a jack of all trades and though many projects were started at home he would always leave the home projects to start projects for his friends and family. We wish to thank the emergency response team and Concordia Hospital who did their best to save him but Pan Bog (God) had other plans. Prayers will be held on Friday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Ghost Parish, 341 Selkirk Ave. with an Oblate Father officiating. Interment will be at Holy Ghost Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers will be honorary brothers Teodor Wasilewski, Adam Barchak; nephews John and Stan Pogorzelec of Winnipeg; John and Henry Pogorzelec of Saskatchewan. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations can be made in Antoni’s memory to Polish Saturday Language School c/o 51 Menno Bay, Winnipeg, R2K 3P2 or Radio Polonia c/o Canadian Polish Congress, Manitoba Branch, 768 Mountain Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2W 1L7.
