Obituary of EUGENE SOLENIK

EUGENE SOLENIK March 10, 1928 – August 2, 2014 It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Eugene Solenik, 86, on Saturday, August 2, 2014. He fought a lengthy battle with cancer. Eugene was born on March 10, 1928 in Drazno, present day Belarus and at a young age of 12 was deported with his family to Siberia at the breakout of the Second World War. Later they were relocated to Iran and eventually Eugene, separately from his family, made his way to Palestine. From Palestine he left for England where he completed his education and in 1952 immigrated to Canada. He was predeceased by his mother, both of his brothers; brother-in-law; niece, and nephew just three months earlier. Eugene is survived by his only sibling sister Eugenia Wilkowski; sister-in-law Janina; as well as nephews; nieces; grandnephews here in Winnipeg and relatives in Belarus and Poland. He will be lovingly remembered for his unique sense of humour. He was a proud steelworker who worked many years at Dominion Bridge. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street with Father Roman Pavlov of the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church where Eugene was a long time member. A private family interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire a quiet prayer in Eugene’s memory would be appreciated.
