Obituary of ANGELITA ESTEBAN BUNDOC MADURO

ANGELITA ESTEBAN BUNDOC MADURO Passed on: August 11, 2014 Peacefully on the morning of Monday, August 11, 2014, Angelita Esteban Bundoc Maduro passed away in Fredericton, New Brunswick at the age of 75. She had been in Fredericton attending the Annual National Convention of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Left to cherish Angelita’s memory is her son Virgilio Joseph Maduro Jr., sister Socorro Rarama, niece Shelly and husband Chris Hutton, nephews Oscar Jr. and Rex Rarama, and brother Dr. Norberto Bundoc. She was predeceased by Virgilio Maduro Sr., her brothers Dominador and Nollie Bundoc, and her sister Carmelita Bundoc Baldove. Angelita was born on March 11, 1939, in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija, Philippines. She was the third of six children born to Lope and Laureana Bundoc. Also affectionately called Heling (or Helen) and later Angie by her friends and family, she attended Cuyapo Elementary School and later Saint Pius X Institute for High School. Upon graduation, she enrolled at the College of Nursing, Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippines graduating in 1960. She went on to attend Law School at Far Eastern University for two years while she worked part-time at the Veteran’s Hospital in Manila. Heling’s desire to travel and seek opportunities abroad led her to the Netherlands in 1966 as part of the Gendringen Group of Philippine Garment workers where she worked at Berghaus Clothing Manufacturing in Gendringen. Her motivation to travel continued as she applied and was accepted for an Immigrant Visa at the Canadian Embassy, The Hague Netherlands. She arrived in Winnipeg in 1969 and worked at Frederickson Nursing Home while attending Red River Community College where she graduated from the Midwifery Program in 1973. She then transferred to the Health Sciences Centre Medical Rehabilitation Department where she worked as an Occupational Therapist Assistant for 32 years until her retirement in 2005 from the Health Action Centre. Angie gave very generously of her time and talent and always was passionate about making a difference. Her spirit of volunteering and community service continued over the years with many different organizations well into her retirement years. As a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish, Christian values permeated every activity of her life. She belonged to The Catholic Women’s League of Canada and served in various executive positions at the local, diocesan, and provincial levels. She sang in the parish choir and the archdiocesan choir. Angie taught catechism at both St. Peter’s Church and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Her involvement in other organizations included Scouts Canada, St. John Ambulance, Holy Family Nursing Home Ladies Auxiliary, Saint Anthony Fraternity of the worldwide Secular Franciscan Order, Age and Opportunity West End Seniors Centre. She also served on the board of directors and/or executive for various organizations including Age and Opportunity, Philippine Association of Manitoba, Immigrant Women Association of Manitoba, Downtown Senior Resource Council, Broadway Senior Resource Council, and Alpha House Project Inc. As passionate and involved as Angie was in community activities, she was even more a devoted and loving mother whose support, care and concern for her son Virgilio never wavered. She was recently bestowed the honour of being selected Mother of the Year for 2014 by the Original Filipino Seniors Association of Manitoba. Those who knew Angie remember also her talented sewing skills. She herself made many of the handsome clothes that her son Virgilio wore throughout his childhood. She made her own gowns and dresses which were worn during Folklorama and other formal occasions. She loved dancing and was also a very good bowler who enjoyed the company of the Mixed Fun Retirement League at St. James Lanes on Wednesday mornings. Angie touched the lives of so many people. While we mourn her passing, we also thank God for the great gift she was to all of us who were privileged to have known and loved her. Lamay will be held from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. with a Prayer Vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, MB. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Avenue. Rite of Committal to follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the many organizations Angelita was involved in or to a charity of one’s own choice.
