Obituary of ROBERT LASZLO TAUBNER
ROBERT LASZLO TAUBNER
Robert Laszlo Taubner, husband, apu (dad) and nagypapa (grandpa), passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014.
Robert was born in Budapest, Hungary to Rozalia and Istvan Taubner. Robert was the eldest of two sons. Robert’s parents both died when Robert and his brother, Tomas were young. Tomas emigrated to Israel with their paternal aunt and uncle while Robert remained in Budapest, under the care of his maternal grandparents.
Robert completed his university education prior to the Hungarian Revolution in 1956. In the ensuing Soviet crackdown, he escaped over the border into Austria. In January 1957, he married Gabriella Sebesteny in the small town Steyr, Austria. Robert and Gabriella emigrated to Canada in May of that same year, spending one year in Calgary, Alberta before settling in Winnipeg. The couple had three children and Robert became a devoted family man.
Robert was a hard worker and spent just shy of 30 years working for Great West Life Insurance Company before retiring in 1992. Outside of his family and professional lives, he was an active fixture in the Hungarian community. Robert founded Winnipeg’s Magyar Haz, wrote the local Hungarian language newspaper and kept busy post retirement as the national (CAN TALK) and local go to Hungarian translator for hospitals, legal cases and education board.
Robert is survived by his wife Gabriella and children, Gabrielle (son Christian), Agnes (husband Rob, sons, Nicolas and Jonathan) and Tom (wife Shawna, children, Marilyn, Tommy and Stephen). He is already missed – már is hiányzol.
Many thanks are due to ALL 4E staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their dedicated care. A very heartfelt thanks to Brittany Kaul for her compassion and gentle care during Robert’s last 5 days.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation.
