Obituary of SHIRLEY LUKASHENKO
SHIRLEY LUKASHENKO
(nee GULAY)
Shirley Lukashenko (nee Gulay) beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She has entered into eternal rest with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Shirley was born on August 1, 1939 and was raised on her family's homestead near Haywood, Manitoba. After completing her education, she left farm life to live and work in Winnipeg as a sales auditor at The T. Eaton Co. It was shortly thereafter she met her husband Peter. They married in 1960 and began their life together. As a stay at home mom, she provided a loving upbringing, supporting her family in all capacities (religion, Ukrainian culture, sports, music lessons, world travels and the value of education). Later in life, Shirley went back to work part-time first at Woolco, then with Canada Safeway until retirement. Shirley was a lifelong learner, who enjoyed travelling around the world with both family and friends. Her love of travel and exploration took her to many places around the world such as Mexico, the Mediterranean, Europe, Alaska, Ukraine as well as many other destinations. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Camp Veselka, Beresford Lake, and Fort Lauderdale. Shirley was a long standing member of the church. It was here that she developed life long friends. Shirley will be fondly remembered for her friendly personality and warm hospitality. She was a clever and bright person who demonstrated compassion to those around her. Mom's number one value and priority in life was her family. To celebrate her life she leaves behind her husband Peter, children Liz, Vicki, Bill and Jim, their spouses, and her grandchildren Leeza, Lukas, Michael and Leo. The family would like to extend a special a special thank you to Dr. Valerie Gordon at CancerCare, the oncology staff at Seven Oaks, in particular to Dr. Fatoy and nurse Lisa Malzensky, along with the staff of Riverview Palliative Ward 3E. Together they set the gold standard for empathetic health care. Thank you as well to the vast circle of Mom's friends who provided support through numerous visits and phone calls. Prayers will be sung on Friday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. At St. Mary the Protectress Cathedral. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 10:00 also at St. Mary the Protectress Cathedral with Very Rev. Alexander Harkavyi officiating. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Shirley's name may be made to the St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 820 Burrows Ave. Baba, you will be greatly missed, always loved, and never forgotten. May you rest in peace, Vichnaya Pam'yat. Cropo Funeral Chapel 204-586-8044.
