Obituary of FRIEDA FUNK
FRIEDA FUNK
On Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Frieda Funk, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, passed away at the age of 87 years.
She is survived by her sons, Reinhold and his wife Debbie of Edmonton, and Gerry and his wife Sylvia of Winnipeg, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frieda also leaves to mourn her sisters in Germany: Hansi Meier, Elizabeth Muller.
She was predeceased by husband Werner Behringer, 2nd husband Mike Funk, her brother, Gustav Huber and sisters Rosa Fuchs and Anni Reichelmeier.
Frieda was born Frieda Huber on June 18, 1927, in Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria. She was the youngest of seven children. Growing up, she enjoyed the attention given to her by her older brother and sisters. She had an active childhood, enjoying the surroundings and often hiking up steep mountains so that she could ski back down.
Life wasn’t always easy, as her entire teen years were spent enduring the Second World War. As peacetime settled in, she met her future husband Werner Behringer while out dancing in 1948. Frieda and Werner were married on September 1st, 1951 and immigrated to Canada the following year. They at first lived with Werner’s sister, Lotte, on Perth Avenue in Winnipeg. Within a couple of years, they settled into their own house on Pritchard Avenue and decided to start a family. Reinhold was born to them in 1954 followed by another son, Gerald, in 1956 after they moved to Alexander Avenue.
As the years went by, Frieda joined the German Choir and spent many memorable times singing at various outings in Winnipeg and across Canada. She also loved her summers out at Camp Neustadt on Lake Winnipeg.
In 1981, Frieda was devastated when Werner passed away. She learned over time to survive and became independent. As her family grew and she became a grandmother she met Michael Funk and love appeared a second time. They were married in 1987 and spent almost 10 wonderful years together. From the marriage, Frieda gained a new family, step-daughters Susie and Barb, and their children. Frieda had a lasting relationship with them and loved to hear of their accomplishments. After Mike’s passing in 1996, she lived on her own in the condo she had shared with Mike on Leila Avenue and spent her time staying active, going for walks in Kildonan Park, swimming and visiting her sisters in Germany almost every year.
Memorial Mass with held on Friday, March 13 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Mountain Ave. and Andrews St. Interment in Brookside Cemetery.
Frieda will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great grand-children, sisters and other family members and friends.
