Obituary of MARIA (MARY) LOHR
MARIA (MARY) LOHR
February 23, 1930 - March 13, 2015
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, with family by her side. Left to forever cherish her memory are her children, Charlie (Tracey), Susie (David) and her grandchildren, Braden, Kaitlyn and Emily. Also mourning this loss is her sister Jolan in Switzerland, and her companion Imre (Jim) Szokall, as well as numerous extended family members and many friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Charles Lohr on March 18, 2010.
Born in Gyor, Hungary, she immigrated to Canada in 1956 to start a new life with her husband and have a family. "Mama", as she was affectionately known by everyone, had an abundance of love for her friends and family. Whether she was cooking up a storm, reminiscing her stories with you, laughing aloud, or simply relaxing...these quality times were the ones that made her the happiest. The Best Mother to her children, Charlie and Susie: not a day went by without her reminding them of how proud she was and how very much Loved they were. Her absence will leave a void that can never be filled. When her three grandchildren were born, Mama was beyond joyful and proud, and each child held a special place in her heart. She was always there for them, giving advice when needed, enjoying their accomplishments as she watched them grow, and being the Best Grandmother one could be. Great memories were made that they will cherish forever. An entrepreneur in her own right, aside from raising her children, Mama had a knack for making money...too many to mention. She was well known for her compassion for others and spent a lot of her time cooking for those in need. If you were not feeling well, guaranteed she would bring you some of her delicious soup, or a nice homemade meal to cheer you up. Even when her hands became sore, she would spend hours baking and making her infamous pasta for others, without a complaint. This proved her dedication and devotion, and how she always put others first. Being an active member of the Hungarian House, you could always count on her being at the many functions that she so enjoyed, joking with her friends and volunteering her time. After Papa's passing, she was blessed to have found someone to share her life with. Imre and Mama enjoyed their time together by playing cards, listening to music, spending relaxing summers at the lake and travelling to warm, sunny places. We are grateful for his commitment to her and for always being there when she needed you.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the paramedics who showed kindness and compassion and to our friends who have helped us at this difficult time.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. We ask that you join us for a celebration of her life to follow in the Rose Room. In accordance with her wishes, cremation will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
The funny faces you made, the times spent together, the wisdom you shared with us and your ability to make us smile even in the worst times are embedded in our memory and hearts forever. Always Loved, Sadly Missed, Never Forgotten
