Obituary of GERTRUDE (GERTIE) SHETTLER

GERTRUDE (GERTIE) SHETTLER 1929 - 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gertie Shettler, nee Arnold, on July 19, 2015 at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre. Gertie and Allan celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June. Gertie was the last remaining member of her family. She was predeceased by her father Charles Arnold, mother Pauline Arnold, brother Charles (Chuck) Arnold, and sisters Evelyn Stojak, and Phyliss Evans. Gertie will be sadly missed by her husband Allan, her son Robert (Sylvia), daughters Donna Bobowski and Kimberley Shettler, her grandchildren Carrie Bibik, Jake Bobowski (Hiro) and Todd Shettler, sisters-in-law Florence Shettler and Janet Shettler, and many nieces and nephews. Gertie was born in Winnipeg. She lived in Humbolt, Sask in her early years then moved back to Winnipeg. Gertie and Allan met in 1945 at age 16 while walking to school. Their first date was on a Snow Tramp from St John’s High School. Gertie worked at Eaton’s Catalogue, Rawleigh’s Sales, and then part time at the Bay. Gertie was a good bowler and had a couple of 400 games to her credit. She bowled for many years with Western Glove, CUAC, and the Foresters. Gertie and Allan retired in 1987. They sold their house in 1989 and moved out to the cottage at Lee River (Black Bear). They spent the next 10 years vacationing in Port Aransas, Texas, where they found many new friends. Gertie’s knees went on her, so their travelling days were over. In 2013 she broke her knee so badly, her walking days were over. She spent four months in hospital and then was transferred to the Kildonan Personal Care Centre. Many thanks to the staff for their excellent care for the past two years. In accordance with Gertie’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
