Obituary of VERONA ADELLA MILLER
VERONA ADELLA MILLER
It is with deep sadness that we announce that our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister Verona Adella Miller (Mother Miller) went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Maples Personal Care Home, in Winnipeg.
She was born in Pepper, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica on August 16, 1922 to Sarah and Ernest Miller. Mother Miller immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1980 to join her loving son, the late Bishop Mervin Farquharson, devoted daughter-in-law, Veleta (now Pastor Veleta Farquharson), and Mother Miller’s younger son, Rudy.
She worked as a secretary at Caymanas Park, in Kingston, Jamaica for many years. Following an admission to Kingston Public Hospital in 1959, members of the 12th Street Berean Church including the late Overseer Smith and Pastor Henry Green prayed for her and she was miraculously healed. From that moment, she became a woman of faith and a champion for God. She had a passion for shut-ins and her mantra was “all roads lead” to go minister to them. As an avid church-goer, she was actively involved in ministries such as prayer team and teaching Sunday school where she fondly recalled preparing the children for the annual Christmas and Easter programs. She was known as “the bell” because of her clear, distinctive alto singing voice. Her favourite hymn was Like a ship that’s tossed and driven, battered by an angry sea.
In Winnipeg, she worked as a nursing assistant until her retirement. She continued to be a devoted servant of God under the pastorship of her son at New Anointing Christian Fellowship (formerly Berean Church of God), and more recently under the pastorship of Bishop Joseph Thompson. Her favourite past-times were cooking, meeting people, and fellowshipping with the brethren at church. She had an infectious, tinkling laugh, and a great sense of humour. Many attest to her wisdom, the quality advice she gave, as well as her willingness to always pray. Her Bible was her constant companion and her all time favourite scripture passage was Psalm 27.
She is survived by her 5 children Neville Malcolm (Joyce), Douglas Powell, Rudy Powell (Monica), Alden Farquharson, Donald Morgan; and grandchildren Nadine, Dayton, Walter, Sholley, Valrie, Desiree, Traverse, Tasheinia, Shedeea, Abdulla, Abrahim, Jamal, Isha, Analda, Omar, Kavona, Mishak, and many great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the dedicated and helpful staff of Maples Personal Care Home and Cropo Funeral Chapel as well as the Bishop and brethren of New Anointing Christian Fellowship. A special thank you to friends, caregivers, brethren, and well-wishers for their visitation, prayers, and kind support.
Public viewing will take place at New Anointing Christian Fellowship (NACF), 1425 Manitoba Ave on Friday, Feb 12, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. A celebration of Mother Miller’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb 13, at NACF. Viewing: 9:30 a.m. - 9:55 a.m. with Service commencing at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street, Winnipeg. A reception will be held at NACF (lower level) following interment.
Mother Miller, you have always said: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple” (Psalm 27:4). May your soul rest in peace as you continue to sing the songs of Zion in heaven.
