Obituary of LEONARD GERALD ONESCHUK
LEONARD GERALD ONESCHUK
April 18, 1941 – March 10, 2016
Peacefully on Thursday, March 10th after a long battle with dementia, Leonard passed away at Holy Family Home with family by his side.
Len was born April 18th, 1941, the second child to John & Josie Oneschuk in Allegra, MB. In the early 50’s the family left the farm and moved to Winnipeg. He attended Strathcona School and Sisler High. During his youth, he enjoyed wrestling and football. Len went on to a lifetime career as a lab technician with the Canadian Grain Commission.
Len met Penny in 1964 and they were married in 1966. In November 1971, their only child Jarrett was born. Thru Jarrett’s childhood, Len enjoyed coaching soccer and being involved in Jarrett’s activities. Summers were spent at Grand Beach and visits with relatives in Saskatchewan.
After retirement in 1995, he enjoyed winter vacations with Penny, his annual day trip to Beausejour and surrounding area with his brother Don and daily visits to Kendel’s for lunch. He also made a life changing decision and joined AA which he was very proud of. He remained very active in the group for the past 17 years.
In 2001, his first grandson Jackson was born, followed by twin grandsons Grayson & Jamason in 2005.
Len was predeceased by his parents, John and Josie Oneschuk; and his in-laws, Howard and Verna Kendel. Remembering him are his wife Penny; son Jarrett (Tammy); three grandsons; brother Don (Olga); brothers and sisters-in-law Jeff and Lynn Kendel, Kevin and Angie Kendel , Leanne and Rick Slobodian, Lorrie and Peter Rogalka; as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, extended families and lifelong friends.
Special thanks to Bill Podolak, Ken Martin and Lloyd Kreutzer for their help and friendship over the last few years. Also thanks to the 5th floor staff at Holy Family for their care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, March 21st at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Avenue with Pastor Bruce Gelhorn officiating. Interment to follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Len’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba or the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba.
