Obituary of SISTER HILDA FROST, OSB
Sister Hilda Frost, OSB
In the early hours of Sunday morning, June 26, 2016 Sister Hilda Frost, OSB passed away unexpectedly at St. Benedict’s Monastery, Winnipeg, Manitoba. She had faithfully lived the monastic life for 61 years and will be deeply missed by her community.
Sr. Hilda, an only child, was born to William Leslie and Elsie Elizabeth (Warren) Frost May 22, 1932 in Sanford Courteney, Devon, England. She was a convert to Catholicism at age 16, having come from an ecumenical background, her father being a Methodist and her mother a Congregationalist, who were married in an Anglican church.
Sr. Hilda entered St. Scholastica Abbey, a cloistered Benedictine community, in Teignmouth, Devon on June 4, 1953 at the age of 21, having finally received consent from her father. She was given the name Sr. Imelda and made her monastic profession May 1, 1955. On May 28, 1983, she formally transferred her vow of stability to St. Benedict’s Monastery in Winnipeg returning to her Baptismal name, Hilda.
Throughout her religious life, Sr. Hilda was known, love and respected by the members of her community and a wide circle of friends as she touched people’s lives through her deeply spiritual, prayerful, joyous and caring ecumenical presence.
She ministered willingly as a secretary to a succession of prioresses and committees in the monastery and in the greater church. With great love and devotion, she served as a resource person at St. Benedict’s Retreat and Conference Centre where she conducted many retreats, especially on Benedictine Monasticism, Monastic Women, the mystics, Christian Meditation and assisted with Taize Prayer services. She was the Director of the Oblates of St. Benedict and a member of the Monastery’s Liturgy Committee for many years, served as organist and as a Monastic Councillor.
Sr. Hilda has a special love for Tim Horton’s coffee and could readily be seen going out to “Tim’s” even when she was confined to a motorized scooter.
She was predeceased by her parents, William and Elsie, and numerous relatives and close friends in England.
The Vigil Service will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2016, 7:00 p.m. at St. Benedict’s Monastery, presided by Sr. Virginia Evard, Prioress.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 30, 2016, 10:30 a.m. presided by Fr. David Kowalski at St. Benedict’s Monastery Chapel with interment following in the Monastery cemetery.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Should friends so desire, donations may be made in Sr. Hilda’s memory to St. Benedict’s Foundation, 225 Masters Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R4A 2A1,
The Sisters of St. Benedict wish to express their gratitude to the West St. Paul Municipality emergency personnel and RCMP for their diligent response and caring service.
