Obituary of GERTRUDE VAN SCHIE
GERTRUDE VAN SCHIE
(NEE ZONNEVELD)
Gertrude, at the age of 82, passed away peacefully, with family at her side, at Misericordia Place on July 7, 2016.
Gertrude was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on March 1, 1934. During her school years in Holland, Truus loved sports and played on the handball team. She also helped her mother and father in the family store. Gertrude was 17 when she moved to Canada with her family and they settled in St. Eustache, Manitoba. She married Eric and they raised their family in Winnipeg. Gertrude was actively involved in her church, the children’s school and other community activities. She sang in the church choir, volunteered with the PTA and Folklorama and enjoyed watching the children’s various sporting activities. Gertie worked for many years, eventually retiring from her job as a bakeshop clerk at Safeway. She and Eric enjoyed travelling and spending summers at the cottage in Gimli. Gertie could always knit up a storm and she loved her bingo and yahtzee!
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Eric, her children Jake, Mary Lou (Greg), Johanna, Shirley Ann (Jim), Neil and John, and her grandchildren, Sarah, Ashley, Robert, Marty, Monty, Max, Hannah, Josh and Willem. Gertie was predeceased by her parents Cornelius and Maria Zonneveld and by her siblings Dora, Theo, Jan, Peter, Anne and Gerry. She also leaves to mourn her brothers and sisters Tina and Dick, Lawrence and Johanna, Jack and Mary Jane, Olive, Suzanne, Kees and Janice and Bill and Laurie. She will also be sadly missed by Eric’s sister Nell, his sister Thea and husband John, his sister Willy and husband Ed and numerous other family members and friends.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff at Misericordia Place who cared for her tenderly in her later years.
