Obituary of DENNIS VICTOR SCOTT-HERRIDGE

DENNIS VICTOR SCOTT-HERRIDGE MAY 16, 1927 TO JULY 8, 2016 Dennis was born May 16, 1927 in Southampton, England. He received his educational instruction at Taunton's School and entered the Southampton Police Department as a Police Cadet until entering the British Army's King's Shropshire Light lnfantry. He obtained a Commission of Lieutenant in 1948 serving in England, Sudan and the Middle East. He returned to England to be employed with a London Newspaper and then entered into Engineering with jet engines at Thorneycroft Industries. He then fell in love with a young woman, whom he saw once on a train accompanied by her aunt and spent the next two years searching her out. They finally met at a Guildhall Dance, where he asked her to dance. Soon after he asked Monica Fulgoney to marry him. They have had a joyous and adventurous marriage of 64 years together. ln 1958 He immigrated to Canada to join the Winnipeg Police Department on April 1,1958. Dennis retired from the W.P.D. with the rank of Chief Superintendent in June 1987. During his time of service he worked in uniform, plainclothes and later was in charge of the Police Training Academy as the Superintendent of Administration. He also attended and graduated from the Canadian Police College (R.C.M.P.)with honours and letters. He attended the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, where he was the first non-American to be chosen President and Valedictorian for the 250 member graduating class. Dennis introduced the "Breathalyzer" to Manitoba for law enforcement. Upon retirement, Dennis lectured and ran two courses for visible minorities who desired to enter the law enforcement field. He was appointed to the Winnipeg Board of Revision and after 3 years was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Revision for a period of 4 years. ln 1974 he was appointed as Aide de Camp to four Lt. Governors of Manitoba, serving 20 years in this capacity. He was Senior Aide to the Honourable Pearl McGonigal, travelling worldwide as representatives of Manitoba and Canada as well as entertaining politicians and dignitaries at Government House. Dennis was a confirmed believer in his Lord Jesus Christ and was a devoted member of Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church on Donwood Drive. He showed his continued commitment to the Body of Christ by using his talents to lead as Chairman of the Building Committee and also Fund Raising Committee that built the new fellowship and worship centre. Dennis leaves behind the love of his life, Monica, whom he married in 1952, a marriage of 64 beautiful years of joy! His married life has been a joy to both of them and an example to his two children and grandchildren. Dennis truly thanked God for all the many years they had been given together. He is survived by his son, Gerard, wife Roberta; grandchildren Crystal; Joel, wife Anne, with 2 great grandchildren Zachary and Libby; Evan, fiancée Trista (whom will be married on August 27 of this year) and his daughter, Sandra Bartakovich and grandsons, Scott and Kirk (living in British Columbia). Dennis repetitively rejoiced in how blessed he had been by God for the family God gave him and for the opportunities he was given in this wonderful country of Canada, to pursue such a variety of occupations and experiences. “To bear and forbear” – Erasmus, was one of Dennis’ favourite expressions. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Mass to celebrate Dennis’ life will be shared with his family. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Boniface Research Foundation in Dennis’ name if desired.
