Obituary of JOYCE LESKIW
JOYCE LESKIW (nee PIDSTAWKA) 1919-2016
Peacefully, on August 1, with family by her side, our dear Mom and Grandma, Joyce, left us to be reunited with her beloved Michael, one day after their 73rd wedding anniversary. Left to cherish her memory are daughter Christine Grywinski (Dennis); son Chris Leskiw (Deb Dyck); and, grandchildren Tanner (Allison Marinelli), Jenna, Todd (Jessica Mohr) and Jaclyn.
Joyce was born and raised in the community of Silver, Manitoba and always treasured her family home. She spent her early childhood working on the farm alongside her parents, brothers and sisters.
As a young teen, she left the family farm and set out to build a new life for herself in Winnipeg. Brave and independent, she supported herself through her work as a maid and then as a seamstress in the garment factories. It was there that Joyce met her soulmate, Mike. They were married on July 31, 1943 and grew their family with the addition of a daughter and son in the years that followed. When the children were old enough, Joyce went to work alongside Mike in the family business, Leskiw Tailors, on Selkirk Avenue which operated until they retired in their 70’s.
Joyce was an accomplished seamstress, keeping herself and her family well dressed in her own creations. Her meals were legendary, and she always enjoyed trying new recipes to compliment her repertoire of delicious traditional Ukrainian dishes, often with food raised and preserved from their large garden. She was an ingenious craftsperson and loved flower arranging, crocheting and quilting. Joyce was one of the hardest working people you could imagine and we all benefitted from her efforts.
Joyce was a devoted wife, loving mother and doting grandmother. She faithfully attended St. Nicholas Church and instilled in her children the traditions of her faith. Grandma always made time for her grandchildren, passing on her skills in both work and play. Each has their special cherished memories of Grandma, and each held a special place in her heart. Joyce was a selfless heroine, a woman of class and grace, filled with pride for the family she dedicated her life to nurturing, and one of a kind.
Mom, Grandma, the sacrifices that you made and the love you gave will always be remembered. You will remain in our hearts forever. Rest in Peace.
The family wishes to thank the staff of 2W Maples Personal Care Home for the care and kindness shown to both Mom and Dad over the last eight years.
