Obituary of ALICE LEMECHA
ALICE LEMECHA
In the early morning hours of September 29, 2016, after a battle with pancreatic cancer, Alice passed away at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg. Alice had just turned 87 years old.
Alice was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on September 19, 1929. She was the second daughter of Daniel and Vera Halipchuk. She attended St. Johns High School and graduated in 1947.
On August 7, 1948 Alice married her long term sweetheart Peter Lemecha. They were married at Holy Eucharist Church in Winnipeg and remained happily married for over 68 years.
After Alice graduated she was a telephone operator at MTS. After her marriage she transitioned to Zimmerman’s jewelry store. She was a waitress at the family restaurants - Dannys and Raphaels. She always had a skill with numbers and worked in several offices as a bookkeeper until her retirement.
Alice enjoyed traveling and toured Canada, the USA, and made an annual winter trip to warmer climates. She loved gardening and put her talents to work whenever possible. Alice did all types of needlework and donated several pieces of her outstanding work to local charities and the church. She was a devote Catholic and always participated in church activities and events.
Alice was preceded in death by: her parents Daniel and Vera Halipchuk; her sister Stella (Bert) Rosney; brother-in-law Mike Lemecha; sisters-in-law Nellie (Art) Gervais, Annie Lemecha and Polly Horaski; nephew Bernie Rosney; niece Louise (Eric) Sayce; and many of her close life friends.
Alice is survived by her loving husband Peter; son Darryl (Karen); nephews Brian (Karin) Rosney, Barry (Brenda) Rosney, and Jerome Gervais; niece Janice (Glen) Scarth; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Special thanks go out to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Palliative Care ward 3E at Riverview Health Centre for being so caring in Alice’s last days. And to Brian and Karin Rosney for their extraordinary efforts in helping out Alice and Peter over the last years.
Divine Liturgy to celebrate Alice’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2:00 p.m. at the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 505 Watt Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba with a reception to follow. Alice wished to be cremated. Her final resting place will be in the Columbarium garden at Holy Family Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a gift in memory can be made to Pancreatic Cancer Canada to fight this wicked disease that has taken so many loved ones.
Please post your special memories, wishes, and photos to Alice’s Facebook page so we may remember her for eternity.
